I've downloaded a torrent for The Sopranos - I've only downloaded the first series so far and some of the episodes refuse to play.

You can try and double click them or drag them into a media player and it will ignore them (not even an error message). I even tried opening the file in Notepad and I get the same problem: for certain episodes it's like they don't exist - you can see the icons but that's it, the computer seems to disregard anything you try to do with them.

I also tried right-clicking and the strange thing here is that the popup menu for the files that won't play is vastly reduced - about half the items that should appear actually appear. The missing options include core system ones like Copy, Paste, Cut, Delete, Rename and Create Shortcut.

It's like to all intents and purposes these files don't actually exist or something.

What torrent software you using? Whatever it is, right click on the torrent and click on anything that sounds like "verify files" or "check files" or something that sounds like the program will scan the files and check that each part has completed properly.

I think it's a virus. There were some comments I found just now that said some files were malicious in that torrent. It would also explain why I cannot delete the files (it just ignores the keypress). I'm going to try a safe mode boot to delete them.

It turns out I can't activate safe mode because my keyboard is USB and obviously the drivers are not loaded until the OS has started.

Seriously, there isn't a strawberry floating facepalm big enough. Do these people think these things through when designing their software?

The USB keyboard should still work without Windows (otherwise how would you enter the BIOS of your machine?). Provided your hardware has USB legacy support. Which the majority of hardware will have. Unless it's really, really old. Which I doubt.
