Watched the first two episodes of season 2 last night, just as great as season 1 so far. Love the music, 80s look and characters are all awesome.

For anyone finished S2. Some general points.

Mike's mum is a total milf.
Dustin is life.

Just finished Episode 7.

That was bad. Real bad. Embarrassingly bad. Where to start?

Imagine Game of Thrones (S3 GoT spoilers ahead) where the Red Wedding kicks off and as soon as the first arrow flies they cut to an entire episode about Bran reconnecting with a stable boy. Imagine Breaking Bad (BB spoilers ahead) where Uncle Jack has Hank on the ground and suddenly there's an episode of Skyler trying to bluff her way out of a tax sting. Episode 7 takes all the momentum built up over the series and crashes it into a psychically induced metal wall. The whole episode was a mini X-Men First Class full of paper thin character constructs and one new actual character who made me fear the direction the show will take in future series.

It was every training montage you've ever seen before, coupled with every "character finds themself through tribulations" trope you've ever seen before. The gang were, as mentioned, non-characters there to fill space, the plot of the revenge driven dark-mirror about as derivative as you can possibly be and the revelation that Elle is not, in fact, a killer was explored fully last season. Add in a conveniently inconsistent power (just make the van invisible!) and you've got a poorly thought out, badly executed vision. Last of all it set up an inevitable narrative for the sequel series where Elle goes hunting for her siblings and starts her own X-Men Juniors. Urgh.

I didn't think it would be possible for one episode to lower my opinion of a show, not to mention a show I considered a personal favourite. This managed it.

You described it so much better than I ever could.

Didn't think it was that bad in all honesty.

Yeah I thought that episode was ok. I get that it got in the way of the main action, but it didn’t ruin anything.

I’d have been furious if it was a weekly show, as a binge show it didn’t really annoy me.

Worst episode of the series but not a bad episode compared to most other shows.

I vehemently disagree. If it were an episode of a non-prestige show I would have thought it terrible. For a Stranger Things episode...well. Like I said it made me think less of the show.

I felt like it served a purpose, in that it introduced a character who will probably return, and it establishes a few other interesting things.

There were a few flaws with it, but I didn't find it completely offensive.

I agree it’s the worst Stranger Things episode, but I don’t think it’s as bad as you do. Personal opinion of course, but I thought that while poorly done, it helped set a lot of things up.

Don’t open unless you’ve seen everything.

It was good to see another “number” and see some different powers.

Kali was important as a “mentor” to help Eleven to develop her powers.

It was needed to show Eleven the wider world and show her that she really cared about Hopper, Mike and the others.

It showed Eleven the consequences of letting her powers overcome her morals.

Having said that, I do agree it was a poor episode, too lighthearted in a way and was completely different in tone to everything else. All of my spoilers could have been achieved in a better way.

I guess this is Stranger Things “Fly” episode. Some people will really hate it, some won’t mind it.

I had no problem with episode 7, it wasn't terrible and added a fairly interesting side story which will probably be revisited at some future point.

'Fly' is probably the single worst episode of any otherwise brilliant TV show I've ever seen.

Episode 7 was alright but not on par with the rest. I feel it's making way for a spin off. I've always wondered about the other kids, but wouldn't like the show to evolve into focusing on them all. Felt quite like the few episodes of Misfits I've seen.

I do wander if the position of episode 7 has affected people's opinion. Had it not broken the cliff hanger would it still get the hate. I agree it felt different in tone but don't get the hate. It was a vital episode for Elle's development.

A lot of people seem to hate it as they think it is setting up a spin off.

If this the episode I'm thinking about, I didn't have any idea that it was criticized. I really enjoyed it

For The Fly or The Lost Sister? If it's the latter I straight up fail to see how people don't have issues with it.

Both. I get why people might have a problem with The Lost Sister, but it served a character well, expanded the world of the show and it's not like this is a weekly show and viewers had to wait two weeks for a payoff to the episode six cliffhanger. It's not the best episode of the show or anything, but it's not deserving of the hate.

The Fly meanwhile, is actually GREAT.

I'll concede the second point there, but disagree strongly with the rest. Like I said, in context it's by far the worst ST episode. Out of context it's a derivative mish-mash of tropes and stock phrases with no interesting development at all.

Each to their own, but I don't think there's anything absurd about the criticisms.

(And I liked The Fly, or at least didn't hate it)

The Fly is the one I was thinking about. That's a really good episode. It's like a sketch show with Walt and Jessie.

Another vote here for episode 7 being a baggy bollock. I really don't want this show to become just another super hero thing. The entire series was amazing but E7 was bad.
