There were a lot of Guiles online last night. I took an absolute hammering all night though. Shocking what a week of not playing can do. Although it didn't help that I'm ranked 190,000 and I was being paired with ranks around 30,000.

Why are you playing ranked if you don't care about getting better? Just play in a lobby with another bronze player.

Or git gud.

Do you want some pointers so you don't get so salty? If you don't want to play with me just upload a replay and I'll point out what you're doing wrong.

I do care about getting better though. That's why I'm annoyed. Because how can I get better when I'm completely and utterly out-matched. I learn nothing by being smacked around by someone who clearly knows the game inside and out. The last couple of games have been more evenly matched and still a challenge but it's infuriating how often I end up without a hope in hell of pulling any moves off.

I think it's just painful that not playing for just over a week feels like I've forgotten everything I'd learned just as I'd started to improve. I've always wanted to be good at SF but I don't think I ever will be. It just requires to much dedication.

Watch the replay, see how and why you lost. You can learn from any loss. You don't have to know the game inside and out to see how you took damage and why.

It really doesn't require that much to get decent. To get REALLY good maybe. But you could easily get to silver if you learned the game a little. And the good thing is once you understand the framework for learning street fighter, you can apply it to every other fighting game, which makes them a lot easier to learn.

Seriously though, upload a replay and I'll give you some pointers. It might help you learn what to look for.

Don't worry, I just recorded one off of your replay list, it's uploading now and I'll edit it in and pick it apart shortly. I chose the last match you had against a Ryu because I thought as he's a well rounded character you'd be able to learn more from that match

EDIT: okay here we go

At the start of the macth you should have anti aired him, crouching medium punch is Nash's best anti air, it's quick and has a great hitbox, you can also cancel it into a sonic boom or jaguar kick to pressure them when they land. If they're too close to anti air with cr.mp (like the second time he jumps at you) then do jump back light kick.

at 0:13 seconds you had no reason to neutral jump, Ryu was nowhere near you and he has nothing that can get him in range to throw you.

The teleport at 0:20 could have worked but you should have done a combo instead of pressing a random button, hard punch into his uppercut kick is his easiest punish combo.

You can go in with nash by following booms, like you did at the start of the second round, but in the Ryu match up it's not as advantageous because of Ryu's shoryuken. Nash has better projectiles than Ryu and his v-skill can absorb ryu's projectiles, so if you have the life lead it's a good idea to just run away and try and punish him when he tries to catch you. Because not only can you anti air him, but if he throws any fireballs you can use Nash's super to go through them and punish him. Although if you're facing a character with no real defences (like Laura) it's a good idea to rush her down.

Honestly, you got a bit lucky hitting that Ryu with those jump ins as he could have just shoryukened you at any point, he was playing dumb. Also, try not to use Nash's target combos, he only has one really useful one. Also, Nash's best meterless punish is cr.hp, st.mp, uppercut kick, so try and use that if you can. The cr.hp is hit conformable and plus on block, so it doesn't matter if they block it.

When Ryu was dizzy you should have done: Jumping hp, cr.hp, st.mp, uppercut kick. make sure you learn the cr.hp, st.mp, uppercut kick combo, it's very useful. You can also use cr.mp instead of cr.hp if you need to as it's a bit quicker.

When he whiffed the ex shoryuken you should have done: st.hp xx lk jaguar kick xx lp > mp target combo xx uppercut kick. Does a lot more damage than a throw.

But yeah, just a general rule of thumb, if you don't know why you're doing something, don't do it. If you hold down back the worst someone can do is throw you. You'll take a lot more damage from randomly pressing buttons.

I know what I said probably seems complicated, but a lot of it is just muscle memory, it's like a dark souls boss really, you see him jump, anti air, if he whiffs a shoryuken do your punish combo, if he throws a fireball, use your super.

If you watch this match you'll notic the Nash doing a lot of things I mentioned:

He plays quite defensively, doesn't jump a lot, he does the punish combo I told you about at 0:12, after which he does cr.hp, sees that it was blocked, and so does a jab instead of completing the combo.

The best way to improve and gain knowledge is by watching high level players use the character you use, think about why they're doing what they're doing, and try and incorporate it into your game.

But anyways, that Ryu was bad, you could have literally just won it by anti airing him and punishing his dragon punches. Bad players often hang themselves.

Yeah, that Ryu was absolutely awful - almost every bit of damage he dealt out came from wild, incredibly telegraphed jump-ins. As Fade said, you'd have won that much just pressing cr.mp all game and then using Nash's excellent normal buttons instead of trying to constantly land combos you'd learned in training mode. Anti-airing and normals come first, then combos.

Thank you again, that really is some amazing advice. I'm itching to play again now and really take it all on board. Think you picked a good video to pick apart because I remember in that game I was panicked to the point of not knowing what I was doing. Looking at it now, it was pretty embarrassing and I can see why I've lost 800 BP in two nights now. Thank you!

Here's a pretty good match of me playing as Nash:

I make a few mistakes, such as doing the wrong combo or pressing the wrong button, like at the end I should have done that combo I told you about, but I accidentally pressed HK, and I missed punishing his Dp before that, but you should be able to pick some stuff up from it.

Thanks man. Don't think I'll get a chance to play more until Wednesday but I'm definitely going to be taking all this advice on board and giving it time and patience.

So how is this going these days? Has online been improved at all?

I see the digital version is £29.99 on the store and with the upcoming story mode (well of what there is of one), kind of getting interested again.
