So what does everybody think about Southern Rail train drivers striking during a really busy Christmas period?

And in general, what do you all think about private-sector employees striking because they aren't happy with pay/conditions etc?

I don't really know what to make of it as I'm not very educated on the subject but my natural reaction is certainly "strawberry floating bastards". They are deliberately picking the worst time of year to strawberry float over a huge amount of people and it's very cynical. But yeah, safety is important right?

I support them. As I understand it, it's to do with automation of the doors, potential job security and safety risks. Automation is something we are all going to have to deal with sooner or later, it could decimate a lot of jobs. I see no reason to rush in a change like this, might as well look at all options and all risks first.

Interesting to see the media spin on this with very little discussed surrounding the reasons for the strike but plenty of coverage of people moaning about it. To hear Teresa May calling legitimate and legal strike action a "disgrace" should be frightening to be honest.

All well and good but why absolutely strawberry float the public over at the very worst time of year?

They don't agree with the proposed role change for conductors and the knock on effect of conductors being made redundant down the line. Basically they want drivers alone to check the doors are safe to open and close, and check the train is safe to disembark.

It's had an enormous effect on my commute to work but I fully support theirs and anyone's right to withhold their labour over conditions/pay. It may be a massive inconvenience for me and others, purposefully being taken at the most disruptive times, but it clearly makes a point.

It's crazy how the Conservatives are trying to make the Union the bad guy in all this rather than Southern Rail.
They've been terrible for years now and they have no incentive to improve. Cutting more jobs is not going to help, the extra money saved here will just go into someone's bonus and the taxpayer will still have to chip in to keep this private company alive.

Presumably withdrawing their labour (which they are entitled to do) at a time when it has maximum impact.

Much the same reasons why teachers go on strike during the week rather than during summer holidays.

If they're being shafted and striking is the only way for them to get noticed then I support it.

If you are going to strike you do so at a time that will cause maximum chaos. Striking is a bit like terrorism, "do this or I'll do this". If they said "negotiate or we will strike between 3 am and 4am for one day", no one would take notice.

Yes?

Scotrail are doing the same up here I think, although not at Christmas. No issue with it.

I believe people had plenty of time to make other arrangements. The state of the railways for me is the biggest indicator that the management don't have the interests of anyone but the share holders at heart. Same goes for the Royal Mail which has been an utter bag of shite (pardon the pun) for a long, long time in the lead up to privatisation.

There's no point in striking unless it causes noticeable disruptions, they're proving a point by doing it at a busy time.

I fully support strike action as it's really all workers can legally do to protest unfair/dangerous work conditions in a way that makes people listen to them.

Striking at a time like this is a bit if a double edged sword. On the one hand, it's when it'll cause maximum impact to the company and make them take notice.
On the other hand it's very likely to turn public opinion against you.

Problem is most of those who use Southern in the first place are pissed off, so the strikes have really not changed much at all... You still get loads who go on and on (with the comparison to nurses/army salaries) obviously but I think the majority of day to day commuters side with the strikers...

It's an absolute mess the way it's been implemented by Southern though, that infamous tweet trying to get people against the strikers was hilariously bad, and sums up their general opinion on how much they care...

Guards are a role that you won't realise how important until there isn't one available... Though there's a lot of fault lying with the DfT as well, since they wanted to push through DOO trains in the first place, yet they and the Transport Minister have stepped back and watched the chaos...

People wanting to remove the right to strike is a scary thought too :dread:

I back them. If people did even the slightest bit of research into the matter then you'd like to think most would come to the understanding that it's a necessary evil.

Without this kind of action the railways will never get better and the private owners will never be held to account.

Naturally, the Tories are siding with Southern Rail.

Not a fan of striking, mainly because it's always a massive pain in the arse for the people who aren't at fault, i.e. customers. Doesn't matter which company it is. Fair enough if there's a legitimate reason, but some of them - particularly related to the Tube - have been for ridiculous reasons. Most of the fuss with this one seems to be over who closes the doors. Just sort it out FFS, don't cause misery and huge expense for thousands and thousands of people. :fp:

I think Royal Mail and British Airways are also going to be impacted by strikes over the next few weeks - joy.

I think anyone working in a public service shouldn't be allowed to strike. That goes for teachers, doctors, train drivers etc etc.

They should fully automate the damn trains & tube network anyway. It can be done and would save an awful lot of aggro in the long term, maybe a few lives too when it comes to transport.
