I looked around for a thread on this game and was surprised nothing came up on the search. It's quite special as games go; I can't really definite it as a genre as filing it as 'survival' doesn't really describe it at all. It's kind of a unique and weird beast, much like the creatures that roam the alien sea it depicts.

One of the things I love about it is there is no real hand holding. There's no quest markers that pop up after something happens telling you 'this is what you need to do next'. It just leaves you to gather information and figure things out. Most of the locations you need to visit you need to work out from various clues scavenged and discovery by launching expeditions in to the deep. One of the things I learned over the course of playing was to keep a deployable beacon ready so you can mark sites you want to return to later for certain resources or when you get better equipped. Another aspect of it is that it does not make you feel powerful. When you venture out into the deep ocean you feel trepidation and you learn to see yourself as prey rather than predator most of the time.

Watched a few streams of it, looks right up my street so hopefully get time to play it later in the year. Sounds like it'll be out of Xbox Game Preview soon.

I played something called The Solus Project fairly recently which is...kinda similar, but not? Survival sim with a bit story too. It kept killing me with random heatwaves, hurricanes and gooseberry fool. This doesn’t do the same, does it? Yes, I’m aware it’s all underwater.

Definitely not. If you die, it's your fault never some stupid environmental nonsense meant to evoke immersion.

I've had it for over a year now, since waaaaay back in early access. Got pretty far at one point, big base, big submarine, but I was midway through an expedition when they changed a load of creatures' hostility levels. Got stuck and had to reset. Still, it's a brilliant game. Best £15 I ever spent!

I got it on sale when it was in early access but only really gave it a proper go recently. I've played exclusively in VR and the performance is pretty gooseberry fool, but damn it's so immersive. I've found myself holding my breath when I dive under the surface a few times  I'm right at the start and not doing very well, but swimming around is good fun and being in cramped caves is panic inducing when oxygen runs low.

Played it a while back and really enjoyed it, though was a bit of a wuss and got a bit too terrified and was very conservative when I did so. Should probably try it out on my Vive now I have that too, but reckon I would be even more scared lol

Always had my eye on this but never took the plunge. No pun intended.

“But I don't want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked. “Oh, you can't help that,” said the Cat: “we're all mad here".

UPDATE: Epic are now giving this game away for free on PC in order to promote their new store. The offer is only there for a limited time so sign up and download it while you can.

https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/p ... utica/home

This is one of the most enjoyable games I played in the last year (easily 8-9 out of 10) so I would recommend you don't miss this opportunity if you have not already played it.

Heard a lot about this but wasn't sure it was my thing and so wouldn't have bought it on PS4 unless there was a demo to go along with. And now I get to try (on PC) before I buy (on console). Thank you!

Wow, this really drops you in at the deep end, huh?

Apparently I need some sulphur, which is in a nearby cave network, but I keep getting lost in the nearest cave warren, that's just full of acid mushrooms as far as I can tell, and running out of air.

Gave this 20 minutes then uninstalled it, no idea what was going on other than swimming around in a circle.

It's your loss, really. It's opaque at the start but it's not a hard game to understand, especially compared to other survival sims. If it's not your thing, it's not your thing but it's certainly worth more than 20 minutes of anyone's time.

Tbh honest it's the survival sim game type not being my thing as it was free I thought it would be worth a go but it just seems very vague and a bit pointless. I'm probably being harsh on the game but can always reinstall it and try again.

I have to go back to this, because I only got about an hour in when it was still early access. I've played exclusively in VR, which is terrifying and immersive (arf) in equal measure. However the UI sits uncomfortably close to your face making it pretty tough and slow going to navigate menus (and there's no prompts on what to press so you're fumbling blind on the keyboard). I think did a small oxygen upgrade and got a swimming aid before I stopped playing.
