No More Heroes developer, Grasshopper, has picked up Epic's Unreal Engine 3 for its new horror game.

The as-yet unnamed title is being produce by Shinji Mikami, the creator of the Resident Evil series, with direction from Suda 51 (aka Goichi Suda, Grasshopper CEO).

Unreal Engine 3 is a powerful, easy-to-implement game engine that is helping the creative team at Grasshopper quickly bring our vision to life. "The innovative tools and technology in Unreal Engine 3 help developers create games faster, easier and with less risk," said Suda.

Jay Wilbur, vice president of Epic Games said: "Grasshopper Manufacture is one of the most daring and innovative studios in the world, and we can't wait to see what they're able to do with Unreal Engine 3." And neither can we.

The EA-published title was announced in August, slated for 360, PS3, PC and interestingly - given the use of the typically high-end UE3 - Wii.

There's no game info though. None.

I have observed that when UE3 is employed in the service of large publishers, and a Wii version is mentioned, usually they mean "we'll employ another developer entirely to churn out a PS2 version, and then have them crowbar in some waggle support for a Wii release too".

I know this isn't exactly the same, but Force Unleashed did a very good job of getting great (and entirely seperate) PS2/Wii ports - and the Wii controls were fantastic. The Wii version even had a very minute amount of bump-mapping! :o

But yes, the Wii version will likely use another engine, or if possible (not knowing the ins and outs of how game engines work, myself) a cut down version.

Hmm.

They ought to do Bioshock on the Wii, in that case. The chucking plasmids about with your hands would work quite well with the wiimote.

I doubt it works well enough to do full on UE3 experiences like Bioshock. :P

Bioshock was actually developed on a heavily modified version of Unreal Engine 2.

Hm... then maybe it is possible after all. Doubt it'd be done though, the developers don't seem to think much of the Wii.

And then moved to the Unreal 3 engine. It means nothing. It means they abandoned the Unreal 2.5 engine and moved some assets to the new engine and totally reworked a whole load of stuff if it was already in Unreal 2.5.

It's like saying the current Duke Nukem Forever could run on a Playstation 2 as it was developed first on the Quake 2 engine.

Great news but the thought of Suda 51 + UE3 does worry me slightly. If he gets UE3 running on the Wii then I'll let him off for a slightly dodgy framerate.

From what I understand, Bioshock was very late in developement when ported over to UE3. They they switched over to UE3, because of the enhanced effects this engine could provide.

So, somewhere out there there's a version of Bioshock which runs on Unreal 2 technology engine 'Vengance'.

Also, Bioshock, isn't really that demanding a FPS. lots of small rooms and enclosed places, should suit the Wii far more than say some of the more expansive UE3 games.

Hmm. But I believe there's some kind of life simulation in place, which is probably fairly "expensive" in terms of what the processor power the Wii can provide.
