We are in an era where games can be turned around. Look at NMS and Cyberpunk, two very disappointing launches that failed to meet expectations thanks to continued effort and support from the developers they now resemble what they initially promised. The fact they've already u-turned on a single player offline mode suggests they are listening.

Well, yes it does. This game's existence is taking away from us getting another brilliant Rocksteady single player experience. The Arkham series is fantastic and we've only had 3 entries over the years so it's not exactly like they come around very often. It's extremely disappointing that they've been working on this for 7 years rather than what they are renowned for.

Are the boss fights really all just ‘hit the glowing bits’ or is there more to some of them?

They aren't all that no.

Very hard if not impossible question to answer at this stage, so no pressure - but did you get the impression that this game could eventually host a decent single player campaign?

I really don't think so, I played it single player with CPU controlling the rest of the squad. The best thing about it is the story and cutscenes which are well animated but then they end and you have to play the game again.

Watching the cutscenes on YouTube is probably going to be the best way to experience this.

Problem is rocksteady were known for great single player games. The Arkham series pioneered that narrative free flow combat game style. This has been twisted away from what its core fans knew and loved. I’m not saying developers should t take a chance and mix things up (world would be stale is everyone played it safe) but I think the publishers have clearly interfered in the pursuit of profit.

It's not totally clear if the game's access issues were resolved before the US/UK/Europe midnight launch or not; I can't see any news about it online. I'm guessing things were sorted out, though, just by the appearance of these video clips.

It does seem that some of the pre-order costumes weren't available. Again, no news reports yet to say if this aspect has been fixed.

It's partially fixed. It's fixed for anyone new logging on, but anyone who logged on before the fix has their game completed. My friend who pre-ordered can't play because of that and got a refund.

This extract from a comment on Eurogamer sums up my thoughts:

I have zero interest in this game, I've seen enough to know it ain't for me. But I know it may be for lots of others. Who that is, I don't know, I'm not assuming anything right now. I'm now only morbidly interested in watching this game through my fingers, like a train heading towards an incomplete bridge over a ravine. Will it make the jump or plummet into the gaming junkyard below? Will the zeppelin take flight or crash and burn?

Seriously, I don't know. For all the 'Leveraging IP' investor pleasing buzzwords they've used to get this far, it still seems like its super risky squeaky bum time. Purely because they haven't made the actual game part something that everyone is universally on board with, unlike their Batman titles. All the IP, buzzwords and wishful thinking in the world can't fix that.

I hate GaaS games. I'm older, I don't have the time for them. Legacy games media broadly agrees. But if one of them is a hit then there's money to be made!

I am fascinated to see how this turns out, much like the chap above with his train speeding off a cliff analogy, I can't look away.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

I kinda feel that way... it's not clear how this is gonna go! Based on what I've watched/read so far, the general view seems to be*:

+ Cool environments to traverse
+ Decent characters
+ Play solo or with one, two or three other players
? The core gameplay loop is fun for the campaign but may become repetetive
? End game scenarios sound good but will there be enough of them?
? Will the battle pass/DLC costs not offer value?
? Will the dislike from some people for online/multiplayer/live games bring about too much bad feeling for the game to succeed?
- Server and DLC issues for some people at launch

* General view. I'm not saying that the two folk here who played the preview enjoyed it. They didn't; they hated it!

No it's a GaaS with microtransactions so I would imagine the saves are handled server side so you can't modify your save to buy stuff.

Yeah, but so is FFXIV and I can still make a new character from level 1 to redo the story.

Video Games Chronicle wrote:Warner Bros. has gifted Suicide Squad early access players $20/£16 of in-game currency, after the game experienced downtime.

The Rocksteady title officially releases on February 2, but those who purchased the $100/£100 Deluxe Edition have been able to play 72 hours early.

However, as soon as the game went live in New Zealand and Australia, Rocksteady was forced to pull it offline after players experienced a bug which automatically completed the game after they logged in for the first time.

The downtime lasted more than six hours. This was followed by further maintenance on Wednesday, which lasted around an hour.

Thank you for being one of our first console players during early access of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League,” Rocksteady said in an in-game message sent to Deluxe Edition players.

“We recognize that you’ve been patient with us during our initial launch server updates and we’d like to show our appreciation for your patience with a special gift of 2000 LuthorCoins. Thank you again!

A nice gesture. I believe that most people playing the game in US/UK/Europe only experienced one hour of downtime, so the £16 in-game credit is a decent bonus.

Edit: I believe that VGC meant Tuesday rather than Wednesday.

I don't really care about this game so I've not been taking any care to avoid spoilers. From what I've heard though;

BIG SPOILER WITHIN

It's a weird choice to have this be the same Bat-Canon as the Arkham games if you're gonna end it by having Batman shot in the face. I mean, yea, it's called Kill the Justice League so it's hardly out of place, but why make it be the same universe as the previous Arkham games if that's something you're gonna do? Why couldn't it just be it's own canon? It's baffling to me that they'd want to send off a character like that.

I figured they were doing some multiverse shenagians but no they really do completely undermine the Arkham series' ending by saying he faked his death and came back, just so they could shoot him in the face :fp:

The dialogue in the scene is terrible too.

Not at all for me. What a mess and way to undermine the whole history of these games (which are some of my most favourite). I still prefer them over the high polish of spiderman which takes a lot of the core mechanics but misses a lot of the interaction with the city and investigations.

Some very strange thinking behind this. Hope it doesn’t bomb too hard we have layoffs and no more games.
