Polygon 9/10

Sunset Overdrive is contagiously enthusiastic

As a collection of mechanics and ideas, Sunset Overdrive is an impressive evolution of things Insomniac has been doing for a long time. Every part of Sunset Overdrive hooks into every other part somehow, and often in multiple ways, and it makes the whole shooting, grinding, wall-running package better for it. But the best thing about Sunset Overdrive is how it's unabashedly enthusiastic about what it is, in just about every way. That enthusiasm, and the freedom behind it, is contagious.

Joystiq 5/5

Sunset Overdrive sets out to create a world where the apocalypse is fun instead of depressing, and that means putting control in the player's hands. Developer Insomniac has given players a sandbox to play in, toys to play with, a treasure chest full of costumes and jokes that lampoon and acknowledge how absurd the whole thing is.

Each of the game's systems feeds into another, making the experience feel complete and purposeful. More importantly, it gives players a plethora of choices in how they look, what weapon they use and how they play, and then makes every single possible combination feel vindicated. Nothing goes to waste in the awesome-pocalypse, and everyone's invited to Sunset City's after-party.

Eurogamer 8/10

Beneath the glorious tech, and once the writing relaxes a little, Sunset Overdrive's wonderfully lurid and heartfelt - a bit like playing an old 4AD album sleeve. If you get that reference, you'll probably get this, too.

IGN 9/10

Sunset Overdrive is big, gorgeous, and a hell of a lot of fun. Never has getting from point A to point B in an open-world game provided so much enjoyment. It provides some of the most fun, frantic, and fantastic gaming I've had on the Xbox One. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to once-again adorn my wolf mask, leap off the highest ledge I can find, and fire an explosive stuffed animal at that group of angry robots.

Sunset Overdrive provides some of the most fun, frantic, and fantastic gaming I've had on the Xbox One.

Gamespot 8/10

Insomniac Games has crafted an excellent game in Sunset Overdrive. It's not without a few niggling issues, but you'll be too busy enjoying yourself to care. You can compare it to games like Crackdown, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and Ratchet and Clank, but by combining the best elements of those games into a single package and injecting it with an anything goes, rock and roll attitude, you'll never think of it as anything but a singular achievement that stands tall on its own merits. It's one of the best games on the Xbox One, and a refreshing shot of merriment.

GameInformer 9.25/10

Outside of the mission monotony, Sunset Overdrive is an immensely rewarding experience that has a look and style all its own and a great gameplay package to complement it. It’s a colorful return to form for Insomniac games, and a hell of an exclusive for Xbox One.

Destructoid 8.5/10

Sunset Overdrive may have a few flaws inherent to many open-world games and lack an engaging narrative, but it's an incredibly fun, vibrant game that's a nice break from the overly gritty tone we see far too often in today's market. After Fuse, this is exactly what Insomniac Games needed.

Kotaku: YES

When Sunset Overdrive does this by easing off its zingers and just letting you relax and enjoy yourself, it can actually be a really good game. A great one, even. But it makes you climb over a giant heaping pile of bullshit just to get to that point.

EGM 9/10

Sunset Overdrive may not be destined to receive the same kind of attention or hype fellow Xbox One releases like Halo: The Master Chief Collection or Titanfall have, but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the most creative, enjoyable, endearing, or satisfying gaming options the console has to offer.

The Escapist 4/5

While its commitment to madness can be maddening itself, Sunset Overdrive is an energetic, fun-focused adventure. The jokes don't always hit home, but this is a game that loves being a game, and you can't hate that sort of honesty.

The Sixth Axis 9/10

Sunset Overdrive has so many amazing moments that I could just fill this entire review with them. It is hilarious, chaotic, stupid, brash, intelligent, explosive, and empowering, and revels in it at every opportunity. If everyone thought Master Chief would carry the Xbox One’s fortunes, then they’ve got another thing coming.

Press Start 8/10

Sunset Overdrive is a success for Microsoft. It brings forward one of Playstation’s most celebrated developers who have delivered a game that only Insomniac could create. The game is full of creative brilliance from everything to it's enemies to the insane arsenal of weapons. Customisation goes beyond any game that I’ve ever played. Multiplayer is the skeleton of something that has the potential to become brilliant in the future. I feel that almost anybody will get initial enjoyment form the game, however it’s not clear to me how long that enjoyment will last for. Ultimately some bland, repetitive story missions and lack of punishment may turn some gamers away quickly.

http://press-start.com.au/2014/10/27/re ... overdrive/

USGamer 4.5/5

Sunset Overdrive is a welcome change of pace from the dour, serious AAA games we've been playing all year. Insomniac asks "who do you want to be?" with tons of customization options, some great weapons, and a very physical way to get around the city. The game feels a bit light in the content department, but it's undeniably fun.

http://www.usgamer.net/articles/sunset- ... one-review

Digital Spy 3/5

Sunset Overdrive is not lacking in enjoyable moments and ideas, but the overall package doesn't manage to live up to the billing publisher Microsoft has thrust upon it. This is not a revolution as far as open-world games go, it's more of a compendium of recognisable elements that have been twisted just enough to make them seem new and different for the uninitiated.

Most annoyingly, Sunset Overdrive overplays its trump card. The traversal options are fun to begin with, but they lose their shine thanks to an enforced over reliance on them. Not a bad game, then, but it does feel like a missed opportunity.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/revi ... wn9SC0SQW2

HardCoreGamer 4/5

There are few games like Sunset Overdrive. It’s a comical, highly diverse shooter that has a strong focus on being fun rather than realistic. While the fetch quests are overly aggressive and the music will occasionally cut out at the oddest of times, there’s still a lot here to love. A well-written script chock-full of fourth wall breaking references, some of the best traversal mechanics available, colorful visuals and a dense world to explore, players will be immersed in this awesome-apocalypse. It’s a shame the campaign doesn’t support full cooperative play, though, as it feels like it could have excelled with it, but the multiplayer component ensures for a decent substitution. All in all, Sunset Overdrive is a breath of fresh air in a stagnant, overpopulated marketplace of gritty shooters.

GamerTime 9.4

Its hard not to see the things that have influenced this game, whether it be the over riding Tony Hawks Pro Skater feel or the Scott Pilgrim style text pops. There is even a little Infamous and Jet Set Radio thrown in there for good measure but overall, I haven’t played a game that is this much fun for a long time and I can’t see me rating a game higher than this for a long time either. Sunset Overdrive delivers a superbly fun experience and a nostalgic thrown back to how games used to be. Just great fun. This will surely be a console seller for Microsoft and the developers should be proud of what is one of the best games I have ever played.

http://www.gamertime.co.uk/2014/10/suns ... ll-review/

Digital Chumps 9/10

In the end, Sunset Overdrive left me profoundly surprised at the strength of its systems. I've liked a lot of Insomniac’s past work, having playing everything from Disruptor to Fuse with plenty of Ratchet and Resistance in-between, but Sunset Overdrive is the first time I’ve felt like they're really out there doing their own thing. Everything else, save maybe Fuse, has been functionally fine and enjoyable, but I've always felt like Insomniac’s riffing on whatever seems hot at the moment. Creating an open world game in a post Grand Theft Auto V world is no easy task, but with Sunset Overdrive they've made something so willfully different than everything else out there, Watch Dogs and Infamous: Second Son among them. Remember when Gears of War changed the game with a fully functional cover system and was subsequently ripped off by every third-person shooter in existence? Sunset Overdrive's devotion to keeping the player in constant motion feels like a similar paradigm shifting moment. With any luck it'll be The Next Big Thing™.

http://digitalchumps.com/game-reviews/3 ... drive.html

GameSided 6.5/10

Sunset Overdrive offers a fair effort that comes up just short of its intentions. Its humor-based story and character development starts off well enough. That is, before relying too much on aiming to be meta or referring to every piece of pop culture from the past decade. The multiplayer, Night Defense and challenge modes would make up parts of a great standalone title, however they cannot overshadow the uninspired story quests, nor the oddly-designed, style-traversal-based combat system. At the core, there is the potential for a great game in Sunset Overdrive. It what makes the execution that much more disappointing.

http://gamesided.com/2014/10/27/sunset- ... substance/

Videogamer - 6/10

Sunset Overdrive has some excellent ideas, but its triumphs are sadly suffocated beneath ultra-repetitive mission design and unsatisfying enemy encounters.

http://www.videogamer.com/reviews/sunse ... eview.html

New Game Network 80%

Sunset Overdrive delivers a fun, energetic mix of action and platforming, despite some narrative weaknesses and an overabundance of perks.

8 player co-op details - http://www.insomniacgames.com/introduci ... ad-sunset/

Resistance and Fuse developer Insomniac has announced an exclusive Xbox One game called Sunset Overdrive.

It's a stylised open world shooter that's along the same lines as Borderlands 2 and Brink.

A CGI video showed a lanky lad running and jumping across rooftops, pursued by some horrid monster things. He's overwhelmed but gets timely help from some friends - no doubt hinting at the co-operative nature of the game.

Sunset Overdrive is bright, colourful and brash.

The new issue of Edge magazine features world exclusive details of Insomniac’s colourful Xbox One shooter Sunset Overdrive.

We visited Insomniac HQ in Burbank, California to be the first media in the world to play Sunset Overdrive as the studio explained how it intends to put the fun back into shooters – the game brings to mind Tony Hawk, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Prince Of Persia and the blue skies and bright colours of the Dreamcast era.

The cover story features world exclusive screenshots, art and details on how the game plays, how Insomniac is working with Microsoft to develop for Xbox One and more – we conducted interviews with Insomniac CEO Ted Price, co-creative directors Drew Murray and Marcus Smith, level designer Cameron Christian, character artist Gavin Goulden, art director Gavin Hollis, and programmer and gunsmith Doug Sheahan to gain real in-depth insight into how the game is being developed.

The new issue is available in print, on iPad, Google Play and Zinio from Thursday May 8.

This is why Overstrike changed direction and name...as to not confuse them both. To be fair Microsoft cherry-picked this one and it paid-off.

I don't mind. I've already farmed Forza off to Photek Falsey, will do it more in the future to other threads if someone's a big fan of a game.

You're doing a good job so far dude. :datass:

Fuse may have disappointed but I'm actually intrigued by this. Seemed to hint at some sort of co-op gameplay. Again I like the artstyle to it. It may be a shooter but at least it's not all Grey and serious.

A Message From Ted – Sunset Overdrive
Posted on June 10, 2013

At Insomniac, we’ve always been transparent with our fans. It’s important to us that our fans understand why we do what we do – it’s really the only way to build a meaningful long-term relationship.

In the spirit of maintaining that rapport, I wanted to take a moment and discuss our big announcement today. In case you didn’t see it, we announced Sunset Overdrive, our next big console IP. You can watch the trailer here and sign up to get more info on the website here. Here’s the official description of Sunset Overdrive:

“Sunset Overdrive is an always changing, open-world shooter set in the not-so-distant future. A catastrophic event has left your city overrun by mutants. While the majority perished or transformed, you flourished. It turns out your calling isn’t picking up trash or serving food, it’s mutant destruction. With an arsenal of kick-ass, overpowered weapons and a knack for traversing the city with hyper agility, it’s not the end of days for you. Your story is just beginning.”

It may surprise some of our longtime fans that we have partnered with Microsoft Studios to develop Sunset Overdrive exclusively for Xbox One. When we first began discussing this idea with Microsoft, we were initially hesitant to shift back into an exclusive arrangement. But as the Microsoft team began introducing us to the abilities and philosophies driving the development of Xbox One, we knew that Sunset Overdrive was a perfect fit. The Xbox One and Xbox Live will support our ambitions to create an ongoing two-way dialogue with our community. It will also allow us to have quicker production cycles, enabling timely content updates for new weapons, characters, storylines and even pop culture-relevant content like memes based on social commentary.

Many of you may be asking what this news means for Insomniac. What about Ratchet & Clank? What about Fuse? Others may ask why we have “abandoned” our PlayStation heritage. The truth is, not a lot has changed. Insomniac has been, is, and will continue to be 100% independent. We have treasured that independence for the last 19 years. It now allows us to own and control our IP, and find the most suitable partners to make those IP a reality. While we are excited about partnering with Microsoft on Sunset Overdrive, that doesn’t mean we can’t or wouldn’t make games with our longtime friends at Sony. That’s the magic of being an independent developer.

Everyone here at Insomniac and on the Sunset Overdrive team at Microsoft is pumped to bring the game to you. We hope you will sign up to get more info and join the S.C.U.K. For our local fans in Los Angeles, stay tuned to our Twitter (@sunsetoverdrive) as there will be some activities around town offering a chance for you to earn some of the first Sunset Overdrive swag.

Finally, next week we’ll be hosting a town hall style online stream. I’ll be joined by our Creative Directors on Sunset Overdrive, Marcus Smith (Creative Director, Resistance 3) and Drew Murray (Lead Designer, Resistance 3), and we’ll answer your Sunset Overdrive questions as best we can.

We can’t wait to show you more of Sunset Overdrive. Thanks for reading, and please let me know what you think about the game and the news.

Great the people behind R3 are doing this, best Resistance easily.

Sunset Overdrive Q&A Townhall Livestream with Ted Price and Drew Murray - http://www.twitch.tv/insomniacgames/b/419633565

Ted Price Talks Sunset Overdrive, The Cloud And Xbox One Policy:-

Coming out of E3, one of the biggest surprises was Insomniac's flashy and fun trailer for Sunset Overdrive. Sure, we didn't get to see any gameplay, but as a demonstration of concept, Ted Price and team managed to capture our imagination. We had a chance to speak with Price today to learn more about his studio's latest project.

It's important to note that because Sunset Overdrive is still very early in the development cycle (Price wasn't even comfortable committing to a broad release window), our conversation about the game focused largely on concept. If you've had a chance to watch the 45-minute trailer breakdown hosted by Price and Sunset Overdrive co-creative director Drew Murray, you'll have some idea of what the team has in store.

"The trailer we presented was a vision of the game," Price told us. "But it represents very much who Insomniac is in terms of its style and tone and it shows of a world we are building right now that has been subjected to a catastrophe."

In many games that are set up with world-ending calamities as the impetus for heroics, protagonists are thrust into action grudgingly. In many cases, they lament their lost existences and struggle for a way back to that lost sense of safety and self.

That's just not so in Sunset Overdrive. "You, as the player, have formerly worked in a dead-end job. You are not looking at a city that has been destroyed and is dark and gloomy. You're looking at a playground." Price calls the world of Sunset Overdrive an "awesomepocalypse."

Price is confident that when we do see gameplay for Sunset Overdrive, that the vision put forward in the E3 trailer by Murray and his co-creative director Marcus Smith (who were lead designer and creative director on Resistance 3 respectively) will correlate to how players interact with the world.

The agile movement, climbing and parkour are critical. And finding a balance between that deft traversal and combat with firearms and other tools is tricky. "It isn't an easy thing to pull off," Price said. "We're breaking away from the standard 'lock you to the ground' gameplay that we think is the norm for third-person and first-person shooters today." A crucial part of that formula is Insomniac's skill at creating fun and unique weapons.

We were told that in addition to a single-player, offline campaign, multiplayer is going to be an important piece of the experience, as is communication with the players. Part of what will facilitate the dialog with the community is a shift in Microsoft policies regarding content updates.

"On this generation, it's difficult to have a connection to players where we are getting information including likes and dislikes or actions and then respond quickly," Price said. "The hardware and the publishing policies prevent that kind of response when it comes to consoles."

Price told us that things are changing with the Xbox One for the better. "We are seeing a lot of the barriers, mechanical and in terms of policy between developers and players, are coming down," he explained. "This gives us a chance to make more regular changes and updates to the game based on what players are telling us and what we are observing them do. We'll have an opportunity to create a much more living world."

We asked if the changes to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade patch fees is indicative of a more fluid (and cost effective) approach to growing game content. "That is what we understand, but I can't comment on Microsoft's policies," he shared.

A key aspect of Microsoft's strategy has been "the cloud," which Titanfall's Respawn Entertainment recently demystified, explaining how it's helping the development process. Insomniac is planning on using Microsoft's data farms, too.

"Some of the hardcore data collection, correlation, and translation that we expect to do is difficult and takes a lot of horsepower, and that is one aspect of the cloud that is attractive to us," Price told us. As for whether they'll be tapping into that power for single-player, he is confident it won't happen.

"Our intent is that you will be able to play the single-player without an online connection," he explained. "The game will be updated with content we expect that all players will want. You won't be able to access that without an online connect." In other words, the way you access new single-player content now is how you'll do it when Sunset Overdrive arrives.

Price did share his thoughts on the benefit of offloaded processing. "When people say 'cloud' it's one of those broad terms that mean many things," he said. "How we use the cloud depends on the genre, depends on the audience, and it depends on the state of the hardware behind the cloud. We're learning that new opportunities and ideas are popping up every month when we discover how we can take aspects of the game offline [to the cloud]. We are going to be relying on heavy backend services to churn through the data we get from players to understand what they're telling us and what they're doing in the game."

Price sees a bright future in cloud computing and Microsoft's vision for how developers will use it. "The potential of the cloud for console developers is pretty large," he stated. "Over the next five or six years, it's one of those technologies that will change in meaning as we see more games come out and take innovative approach to the more and more offline processing that's available."

"It is proven that cloud services can improve products and services in other areas, so it's cool that games are starting to take advantage of it," Price told us, explaining that other industries have successfully integrated cloud computing to the benefit of industry and consumer alike.

"Looking at the world's approach to this now-massive amount of hardware we have that can be taken advantage of, these are things are going to change faster and faster. Not just for games, but for every industry. It's ultimately good for all of us who consume entertainment."
