This is the game that rocked 10 year old Suzzopher's life. I don't think I have played a game as much as I have this amazing game.

I remember getting this for Christmas in 1990 and with being 10 not being able to afford games until my birthday etc. It gave me six months of awesome.

Played through it again last year and still remembered all the short cuts(using the warp whistles and clouds).

First video game I ever played, also the first one I ever owned when I got a NES, think that was 1992 or something, was only 9.

Suzz, I also had 6 months of this before I got another game (Mario 2 for my bday, what a rubbish game that was!)

I actually had a nightmare about that beast when I was little, stuck on that level for a week

Edit: This is how I got past it too

P wing was a cheap trick.

That said, it took me about 10 years to reach the final boss, and that was on the SNES version where you could save.

Absolutely the biggest leap in terms of 2D platform games ever for me. Especially in terms of structure and scale. The defining game for the NES generation, certainly.

I still think it's the pinnacle of 2D platforming, yet to be beaten.

That speedrun is just EPIC though.

I did not know about that second warp whistle. The first one, sure, but I'd always get my second one from smashing through the block on the map screen of the second world and beating the Hammer Brothers (I think that's what they were, anyway).

Don't get too excited. I'm pretty certain this was done on a emulator and is edited. The guy did it as an experiment rather than to trick people if I remember rightly.

I'm not even sure how I found out about the second warp whistle. I knew about it when I was younger, but can't remember who told me.

Anyways I strawberry floating love Mario Bros 3. It was awesome. Oh and the sun really pissed me off back in the day. That giant fish too.

Ah, I thought I'd seen that Speed Run video before. It's a tool assisted speedrun, but nonetheless impressive for it.

I remember reading about it in a Club Nintendo mag I got when I sent off the registration card from my original Gameboy :)

I knew about all 3 whistles, but I didn't know you could continually bounce off stuff without touching the ground to get extra lives!

That came from level 3-2 in Super Mario Bros I think.

You could also do it in Super Mario World. It happens because every time you jump from one enemy to another, the points you get double starting from 100 until you get 8000, after which you get one life each time.

Something I enjoyed immensely about this game was climbing into the boot on level 5-3... Why oh why wasn't that available in other levels in the game!!! Only played it in the mario all stars pack on snes, and was as seduced by Mario 1 and Lost levels as I was with 3, but my god an incredibly fine game. Never completed it though..Doh!

What planet were Nintendo on when they decided that finishing a game that big was easily doable in a single sitting?

It was a strange decision, especially considering Zelda had battery back-up before it.

The worst was getting pretty far into the game and the NES console itself deciding it needed a break due to over-heating and switching off. :x

Did anyone here actually manage to finish the NES version without whistles?
