But its execution and seamless fluidity, as well as the sheer rolly-polly-bouncy-squeezy joy of controlling these things is fantastic.

I think the genius isn't in the transformation gameplay, but how it's been seamlessly added to Mario's repertoire. It's not like the FLUDD, where Mario was given a big new backpack to justify his extra moveset. It's the exact same classic Mario design we're used to, but his hat has been re-purposed to have this extra ability. If you've not played much mario before you could almost be forgiven for assuming his hat has always been used to throw around.

The game feel of diving into the cap to extend your jump is so good.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

I would love to see hat-jump become part of the standard 3D Mario moveset, even if future games don't have Cappy transformations.

Hah! No secret is safe! I was so bored the other night - killing half an hour before picking up my better half from work - that I popped it in and had a very quick go. Found it a bit odd tbh, a bit wacky weird.

What I want to know is, is anyone using the split joycons as their control scheme? I found the 'normal' dog-face controller set up a bit awkward.

Not sure if I'll go back to it before Christmas - we'll see - still got a very demanding farm to run.......

Have you played many Mario games before, still? Tbh I haven't - mainly just Super Mario Maker, with odd bits here and there of the others. I love the feel and styling of this although I recall you mentioning that it didn't really suit your own tastes.

:o . I get the impression that you have a wee bit of a Stardew Valley addiction setting in :) .

What's the secret to the dive into hat jump? My success rate in pulling it off is...inconsistent at best

I might be wrong as it's kind of muscle-memoried, but hold Y when you throw the hat then dive-jump as soon as the hat reaches its maximum range/becomes stationary. You don't want to wait too long (or long at all really) from throwing the hat to diving into it. It's just more of a "press" than a "tap" when throwing the hat, followed by the dive jump.

You only need to hold Y after doing the dive. You can let go of Y after throwing, but obviously not for too long or it will return to you.

It's surprising how quickly the moves become ingrained - I remember watching the videos of the hat dive and thinking "that looks impossible!" and now it's second nature to pull off.

Related post-game spoiler:
One of the moons on the "Dark Side of the Moon" involves a sequence of about 10 long jumps across a line of one block squares that if I had been presented with it at an earlier stage in the game I would have ran a mile from - but now having got so comfortable with the moves and controls it was such a thrill to fly across! :toot:

I found that one pretty hard. The method that got me through it was leaving just a fraction of a second for Mario to 'roll' slightly on the top of the pillars before jumping again, rather than jumping immediately, but it still took a few attempts to get right.

Oh yeah - it definitely wasn't a walk in the park! But I think the thrill is in the way the game provides such a solid and tactile move-set that even when presented with something like this where in other games you might be put off, here it just seems to make me think "Yes - I CAN do this, and when I do it's going to feel awesome!"

Perhaps the more important factor is that when you don't get it right you know it's because you messed up - not because the game is broken or unfair. That's one of the things that I think Mario has generally always excelled at.

Yep! It's a game changer, I honestly wish I'd discovered + learned it sooner

Love rolling constantly as well, even if they did arbitrarily make 'boost' rolling faster through motion control than pressing Y ¬_¬

Have you discovered the instant full speed roll? Ground pound and then roll, you'll shoot off. Also ground pound then jump underwater and you'll shoot up.

I think you can do ground pound and then Y to breast stroke as well, comes in handy.

One of the things that I still think Mario 64 does better is swimming.

I'm up to nearly 600 moons now and I don't think I've started using any of these fancy techniques you guys are describing. Time to start learning I guess.

This frustrated me loads because the game says "press zl + y" to swim fast, so I was trying to press them together and getting /really/ inconsistent results - which made a moon in the seaside kingdom that requires you to swim fast really annoying. I kept ground pounding downwards half the time.

Of course what the actual move is is "press zl and then press y", which once I realised it was then easily replicable.

Probably the most annoying thing in the game. The swimming in general isn't great as Mario.

The thing I didn't initially realise was that you had to tap Y again (with the right timing) as you dive into the hat to bounce off it (as opposed to pressing jump or holding dive) - when that timing is second nature it's transformative and liberating. Changed my underlying nagging feeling that 64's belly dive momentum kept it above this, to thinking this is the best controlling Mario ever.

I may be misunderstanding you here, but that sounds needlessly complicated. When you perform the dive you only need to keep holding Y (from performing the dive). There's no need to tap it with any sort of timing. Just hold it after the dive and Mario will automatically bounce off Cappy.
