I'm holding fire on considering Mario for "Best Game Ever™" territory yet - don't want to get too hyped.

I was a few months late to the Zelda BOTW party and even though it is undoubtedly a phenomenal game I think the mega hype that surrounded it was just a bit OTT compared to the reality.

You are not the only one! Although I have it pre-ordered and can't wait to be proved utterly wrong in two weeks time. Graphic style jars with me whereas it delights others; levels look big and spaced out whereas I like things to be tight and compact and abstract; and it looks like they may have overdone the wacky drugs! IMHO you can be too wacky.

However, like I say, I'm sure I'll be proved wrong!!

Who knew that a gaming topic could touch upon weird mental hang-ups? Or that it would all be so easily resolved within one paragraph :o ... :toot: .

Yeah but you are missing out because you never catch up etc. so by trying to not miss out you are making it worse for yourself.

The dude appears to have been a Finnish composer... I read this as meaning BotW was a great game but perhaps not up to Bach standards?

In looking him up, I have also learnt that Finland used to be part (owned) of Russia? My word, Odyssey is teaching me about the world even before I’ve played the game :o :toot: .

I was more thinking along the lines of Sibelius's music often being described as organic, with strong connections to landscape and nature and source material from myths and legends. Something like that anyway.

If anyone wants to hear an exceptionally scary piece of classical music, listen to his tone poem 'Tapiola' about the gods and spirits that dwell in the immense, brooding Finnish forests. Shiver!

Jawa: BOTW and Odyssey are ideal jumping-on points for their respective series, precisely because they're pretty unlike other recent games. There hasn't been a Zelda like BOTW ever, and the last Mario like Odyssey was arguably on the N64.

Yeah, definitely, Karl - other games in the two series can stay in the background for now and I may play some of them one day. I will jump on board with these two at some point.

The EDGE subscriber cover is great - much better than the retail version.

It will be incredibly difficult for me to resist getting a Switch with this game coming out...

BOTW is more like the marriage of Figaro.
Shigsy is Mozart.

Realistically I am never going to go back and play through the Mario titles in order so perhaps I should just accept it and enjoy Odyssey.

I actually feel the same kind of way as you jawa, and tend to do one of three things...

1) Accept was that I’m probably not realistically going to go back and play all the previous games - at least not in a decent timeframe - and just play the new game, enjoying it for what it is and if appropriate perhaps watching a quick recap or similar of the games predecessing it. These tend to be generation-defining games like Zelda and Mario (I wouldn’t watch a recap of these games) and older games that aren’t easily accessible (I did this with the Witcher 3, and do plan on playing at least the Witcher 2).

2) Go back and play the series, or as much of it as possible, so I can go into the current game with knowledge of all the others. This is often with games that I’ve missed out on but have always meant to get around to playing: for example, Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed.

3) Put off playing the games indefinitely, until a time that I can wait until a potential remaster or can be bothered to try pick up the older games and work through them. This usually applies to games that I’m not as fussed about playing immediately, and I probably won’t realistically play all of these.

I used to do 3 quite a lot and so build up an overwhelming backlog (that I’m still working through!) whilst playing games like FIFA, Rocket League and CoD which have no ‘ending’ and are kind of mindless. I do still enjoy playing these though and spend a good portion of my gaming time doing so, but don’t do so at the expense of missing out on truly great games.

I think basically what I’m saying is just go out and play BotW and Odyssey without worrying too much about past iterations, because they look strawberry floating amazing  they aren’t integral to the new games as there’s not a story to catch up on as such, and you can always go back and play Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time in the future. I’ve only ever completed two Zelda games - one being a couple of weeks ago (WW) - and have missed out on loads of the old Mario games.
