The flower is great :toot:

I'm buzzing for this. It's looks exactly like what I wanted. A 2D Mario with a new art style and Nintendo not afraid to take some creative risks.

Jenuall wrote:There's just something deeply unattractive about the composition of the art in this (and the NSMB games) for me. Each individual element isn't necessarily offensive in its own right, although they definitely lack the charm of the early 2D art assets, but the way it is all put together just feels, for want of a better word, cheap.

It's like copy and pasted stock art assets from some game maker package dropped together with no refinement to how they sit with one another, both technically (lighting/artificial highlights frequently looks inconsistent across different elements on screen) and artistically (clashing of styles, parts that look like they belong to different asset packs slapped together)

I get what you mean about the almost clashing styles, I think some elements (characters especially) look further removed from NSMB style than others (like the pipes, blocks and coins). I think part of it is down to the flatness of the level with 3D models on it (compare 3D world style in Mario Maker that gave the level depth for where Mario and enemies are standing).

Jezo wrote:They just didn't want to think about how mario would stretch.

Do you want to think about that? I know I don't!

This game is full of character, look at the expressions on Mario’s face and the way he interacts with the environment. It’s a step up from NSMB that much is clear

The right reminds me of NES/SNES era Mario  think this has overtaken Spider-Man 2 to become my most wanted game this year!

If that talking flower gets patched in with AI generated voice lines (maybe reading out people's comments) I will be back on the MM2 train.

In a shock twist to my expectations I checked out the Japanese trailer and think I actually prefer the sleepy song-song English one more?!

Also I agree with all the positive reception to the spritely , sprite-y soft-shaded rich-coloured art style.

Unsure about the music but it's better than NSMB's elevator Mario music.

Sorry the first but referred to the flower! Preferred the English one compared to the more zany harsh Japanese one. But let's see. I just really liked the Well Then bit

Would much rather have had a new Mario Maker than this in all honesty

Great to hear! The “well then” has basically sold me on the game. I can’t get it out of my head.

I never really got the appeal of Mario Maker, mainly down to my lack of creativity, would have thought there will either be a Wonder style update for MM2 or a MM3 out for the next hardware? But at this point we could still be easily 2 years away from new hardware

Same for me. I played a lot of user created levels, but outside of GRcade submissions it was always a bit of a lottery. I was mainly there for the single player stuff. Then my NSO sub lapsed and that was me for 2 years.

I tried creating two levels. It was two of the most stressful experiences of my life (in or outside of gaming).

Mario Maker is an EPD10 game who have both Pikmin 4 and Mario Bros Wonder out this year, so it's unlikely to even be in development. Obviously it makes sense as a 1 per system series but I'm not totally convinced MM3 goes straight into production after Wonder. It didn't sell badly by any means-8m I believe, but that isn't a huge increase on the first despite the far great installation base. If Wonder is a big hit (which let's be fair, it will be) I can see them going for a sequel before MM3. Nintendo are in the process of expanding though so who knows.

Wouldn’t a Wonder style update be more viable for MM2 then? Obviously it’d still take a fair bit of work, but probably not as much as a whole new game, imagine a lot of the process for the Maker games is testing all the items/objects work as intended in the given styles.

I think we all know what will actually happen is they'll port MM2 to Switch 2 and add Wonder as a bonus theme.
