Like others I'm a little tired of the art style but I've loved the other 2d games all the same so looking forward to this.

Somebody must have compared this to Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros. already, right? Anyway, definitely up for a step away from NSMB, that was tired and dull by the second game.

I think it's interesting that some people still think this looks (in art style) like NSMB. It's different, but maybe not obviously different enough for it to be the line in the sand Nintendo might want it to be seen as?

I appreciate the new, more cartoonish look and the differing character it gives Mario, more emoting and less clinical as I think the "New" Super Mario Bros. style increasingly felt. It's 3D but has more of a hand drawn look to it in what for some reason I want to call "more French", not exactly like but closer to something like Rayman Legends. That reinforces the "weird" drug trip impression I think! My partner said the character art is a bit like the Pokemon Cafe game, which is also a good shout.

I'm not completely sold on the visuals though, like looking at how the pipes are animated (it's like the one visual being transformed rather than redrawn, that kind of thing makes a game look cheap to me), and it hasn't radically departed from the clean and sanitised NSMB absence-of-style, especially in some of the environment art.

There's just something deeply unattractive about the composition of the art in this (and the NSMB games) for me. Each individual element isn't necessarily offensive in its own right, although they definitely lack the charm of the early 2D art assets, but the way it is all put together just feels, for want of a better word, cheap.

It's like copy and pasted stock art assets from some game maker package dropped together with no refinement to how they sit with one another, both technically (lighting/artificial highlights frequently looks inconsistent across different elements on screen) and artistically (clashing of styles, parts that look like they belong to different asset packs slapped together)

Talking flower does absolutely nothing for me either, and when will they learn that the less Martinet we hear during a Mario game the better? I don't need to hear him chirping away all the time.

Music seems slightly better than the "BAH-BAH" crap from NSMB, but is still a far cry from the greatness of the 8 and 16 bit era, based on what this trailer showed at least.

This should have been a slam dunk, but they've biffed it hard

The flower isn't voiced by martinet :capnscotty:

The other things you've said are your opinion but I can't really agree with it at all.

I didn't say it was?

I dislike the flower talking, and I dislike Mario's chirps

Hate the nsmb art style so much, I don't know why we still have it here. And no it's not a new art style for those that are saying it is.

The new art style looks great, much better than NSMB. All the action on screen looked a bit chaotic, but hopefully won't be so in practice. Seems like they're trying hard to do something a bit different, lots of different gameplay mechanics. It looks like Odyssey but in 2D. Music was fantastic too, wonderfully different and modern.

My only gripe so far is Elephant Mario. That is very Odyssey but made sense because he was possessing something. Generally power-ups just give Mario the power; it's still him in some zany suit. Penguin, Frog, Cat... but now he's literally just an elephant. Which will probably tie in with this Wonder gimmick and make sense, but it's just, they kinda already did that? Though perhaps Mario just having no limits on transformations is the future of the series.

I also hope the talking flower isn't annoying af

How can you look at these and say it's the same art style? There's so much more expression to the characters and (zoomed out) the environments. Even look at the shading and it's worlds different.

This is a screenshot from U. It looks much worse.

For some reason Mario looked like the lead character from "Braid" in bits of that trailer.

Also - I thought the talking flower was great and genuinely made me smile. Seemingly everyone else hates it.

The flower is gooseberry fool.

The game will be brilliant fun though, it looks like the more creative end of the stuff you saw in Mario maker 2.

I liked the flower in the Japanese version, I haven't seen the English trailer but I think it might be a different voice actor.
