Does anyone else feel it’s quite sluggish when trying to turn around? Like I’ll be facing right and the CPU will then jump to my left and I flick left on the stick to turn but it seems to take ages to actually register so then I end up getting bashed up

Don’t remember previous Smashes being like that?

There's an option in Controls to set your stick sensitivity to high that might help you. Haven't felt that specifically registering turning around is worse than the last couple of smash games myself though, even with the sensitivity at default.

The most bastardly spirit I've had to unlock is Pauline. On the classic kong stage, you have a weaker jump, Against a giant roided up Kong and a hammer weilding Mario while you have to kill Peach who constantly evades. Had to google a cheese strat to do it.

Yeah I am not a fan of unlocking Characters, had friends round and we have managed to get over 60, without doing any cheese strats, maybe I should have looked it up, as it is just annoying, expecially as we wanted to play a few characters that just have not unlocked yet (Cloud & Ken)

Other than that gripe I have really enjoyed what I have played. The Spirits mode is a lot of fun, I love some of the references they have done. Oh and I bloody love what they did when you do Classic mode as Ryu. Bloody brilliant.

So whats a good technique for improving your ability offline? I'm currently playing Smash mode stock matches against 2 other CPU's, and setting a skill level slightly above mine. I guess limiting items would also be sensible for actually improving technique.

Any other good ways of monitoring meaningful improvement in skill?

I knew I would get a piss take response. It is a good one though, the way it descends in to madness and anger.

So thanks!

Im happy being terrible too, honest. It's just that seeing a bit of progress is important to me when playing a game. If it just feels like a lottery I'm liable to lose interest.

And I accepted.

So...I've not smashed since Brawl...which new characters are shall I try?

(Marth/Mewtwo/Fox/Pikachu/Zelda/Ganondorf were old favourites)

I'm just staying Marth for now. Countering to Smash them off the edge never gets old!

Depends on what your goal is and what you class as meaningful. If it's just to get good at the singleplayer modes, then just playing them repeatedly is how you'd improve at them, and fighting vs CPUs in the way you suggested would help too.

If it's to get better vs human opponents, fighting CPUs aren't an ideal substitute. Good for getting basics down though (and if you look in the Tips section in the vault, it's quite comprehensive on basics/technique). For practising combos, the training mode is good because the combo counter (counts up for 'true' combos) - not exactly ideal either since actual players can influence the way they're launched when hit, but it's still very useful.

And then there's if you choose to play with items or not. And if you play on the more random/hazardous stages, or the more neutral ones that result in less randomness/jank. And also there's the distinction between formats like 1v1 and 3/4-player free-for-alls, the latter which emphasise randomness more. Different format variations emphasise different skills, and some are more skilled-based than others.

Thanks. I'm really just wanting to feel like I'm getting better Vs CPU right now, I don't have online for switch to give an indication of how serious I am. I might pick it up if I'm really enjoying the game still a few weeks from now.

Spirits ain't a joke lol. Can be almost too hectic to unlock some of them tho. Something about seeing a Character you like and recognise on the Spirit Board is hype too.

Starting to iron out my smash 4 muscle memory and the game is feeling so much smoother which is great. I don't think I'll settle on any definitive main for a while too because part of the fun is playing loads of different characters and I don't want to tunnel myself so early on in the game. That said, Wolf can do some things and I can see him being a pretty solid pick for me going forward >,>

Have you unlocked Inkling yet? I made short work of Bayonetta in the Juri fight using short throws of the ink grenade (tap down special - holding it does a long throw) and keeping her at a distance.
