They have been up until now. Remember when Ganondorf was released as an echo, effectively, of Falcon? Which was and remains bobbins, but still.

He's not a true clone though, so wouldn't exactly call him an echo. The reason is because of fan demand and being close to Melee's release. Falcon's model was the closest to fitting Ganondorf so they used that as a base.

The limitation is because of the box theory.

If we only have 2 slots left, then I'd want Isaac and Zack being Cloud's clone.

This means it has to be one of those 8 characters because of the 'group of 9' formatting they decided to use on the box. If there was an echo in another group of 8, we would have seen the alteration in the order in an earlier group.

They're not leaving an echo as a big reveal, I'm assuming they'd announce it alongside the newcomer, but if the echo were a 3rd party, they'd absolutely big it up like they did Richter.

Also, I don't work at Nintendo, I don't know if any of this will be absolute fact. I hope we get more than 2 characters and that Incineroar isn't the final character to be announced.

I wouldn't make assumptions based on a box personally anymore than I'd make assumptions based on incomplete character select screens, UI or anything else. The whole "slot" concept is why people get so upset when a character they aren't interested in, a character that is clearly not intended for them specifically, is added. It isn't 1999, they aren't trying to cram content onto a 16 megabyte game cart.

It's pretty likely though, but there are plenty of arguments for and against it. I literally just wanted to spark a discussion on if the theory were true, what final echo and newcomer would you like to see? Like, this could be the very final character in Smash ever.

I'm still amazed we are yet to see anything ARMS. Surely were getting an ARMs character?

The game is still just under 3 months away and I still think they'll be more characters to come than 2.
My guess a character a month, then a load in the inevitable Smash Direct.

I recon 8-10 more characters but most of them will be echoes.

Alongside as in in the same direct, akin Dark Samus and Chrom.

At this point, I think the final 2 characters are Ken and Incineroar but what they will do is fully roadmap their DLC plans in the inevitable November Smash Direct.

I think it’ll be a season pass and they’ll confirm some of the characters they’re working on, which will include Springman + echo and Rex + Pyra (because their games were released too late in the development cycle to get in the main game) and some third party reps. I don’t think they’ll reveal everything but enough to lessen the blow of how underwhelming a final reveal of Ken/Incineroar would be-which let’s be fair, it would be, after the announcements they’ve had so far.
