Superfrog HD announced for PS3 & PS Vita, releasing 2013

Hands up if you remember Superfrog, the retro Amiga platformer heavily endorsed by sports drink Lucozade? Developed by Worms studio Team 17, the green bounder is coming back in HD to PS3 and PS Vita this year.

In a post on PS Blog EU, Team 17′s managing director Debbie Bestwick said, “We’re extremely excited about bringing Superfrog HD to PS3 and PS Vita; it’s the most requested game that our fans are always asking to see make a return.
“Now, with the 20th anniversary of the original Superfrog and the recent re-release of our classic survival-horror Alien Breed, we feel the timing has never been better.”

The platformer was well-received back in the day, so I’m sure retro fans will get a real kick out of Superfrog’s return.

Team 17's recent Alien Breed remake was excellent, so I have moderately high hopes for this. Vita version for me, thanks.

One of my favourite Amiga games.

I hope this is good, and I hope I don't have to wait too long for it to be given away on Plus :shifty:

That looks like an awful lot of work.

Why not get something like GameMaker (there's a free version) and make your own game?

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

I've used GameMaker before, but found it quite restrictive (was trying to procedurally build levels). I've made some simple games in C++, and Java too.

This was just a way of learning the tools in LBP2 and seeing what was possible. After my Superfrog experiments I went on to do a remake of the Amiga classic 'Basejumpers' which turned out very well. I then moved on to another game and haven't been back to LBP2 but once you learn the tools it is quick and easy to make almost anything.

Oh wow. It's amazing how I watched that SuperFrog clip and feel like I've been wacked over the head with a wave of nostalgia for days gone by. :|

With GameMaker surely you have to have some programming skills? Is the stuff you can make limited, and can you use it to make a graphic adventure?

You may need some programming skills, but it depends on the complexity of the game you have in mind. GM gas its own scripting language. You could make a whole game just by using the GUI though. Stuff like physics, animation and collision detection are all integrated. Making a graphic adventure would be pretty straightforward. Of course, making a good game is always difficult regardless of the tools you use.

Stealth Bastard Deluxe was made with GameMaker: http://www.grcade.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=32470

...as were Super Crate Box and Spelunky.

Download the free Lite version and try it out.

BTW: programming is not as hard as programmers like people to think.

Cheers for the info.
I know Spelunky got loads of great reviews so that's pretty excellent!

Putty Squad, the sequel has also had quite a few hi-def releases.

Which is odd because it was finished but never released on the Amiga so far as I know.

Putty was great, but too ambitious for a single-button joystick. Just watching that video reminded me of the mental combos you had to come up with to do half the moves. :fp:

I don't remember it being that bad. Undoubtedly would have been easier with more buttons, mind, but I thought the control system was rather evocative.
