But Benoist is appealing enough, and the action sequences impressive enough, that the show gets away with the lack of subtlety. It's a competent superhero show made by people who've been doing this a while (even though Adler's new to the DC TV universe, she wrote for "Chuck" and co-created "No Ordinary Family" with Berlanti) and have gotten better at it with each new stage of things.

The good news is that Benoist, just as fellow Glee alum Grant Gustin did with The Flash, inhabits Kara Zor-El/Danvers with a contagious exuberance, once she has cause to let fly with her powers in the course of saving a crashing airplane. The Gustin comparison is important, because two years ago there were those who stomped feet and deemed him “wrong for the part” (based on this, that or the other superficial thing) — but when he made his debut, they were proven wrong in a… jiffy.

Supergirl is a cheerful and spot-on adaptation, skillfully accomplishing the difficult task of making a corny comic-book story seem not only believable but also welcoming to those who’ve tired (or never enjoyed) the genre.

Benoist is just so winning in this role.... As he did with CW’s “Arrow” and “Flash,” executive producer Greg Berlanti has managed to take a familiar superhero story and spin it into a TV show readers and newcomers can love.

But even if it’s dangerously overstuffed, and a bit too familiar in places, the Supergirl pilot still does such a nice job of establishing its protagonist that viewers will want to forgive the show its (numerous) clunky bits. Now that all that’s out of the way, the show can hopefully turn to the business at hand: letting Supergirl be, well, super.

I don’t want to come across as unreasonably enthused about Supergirl because CBS only saw fit to send out the pilot. There could be a precipitous drop in quality in the next few weeks, for all we know. But what’s onscreen here is intelligent, sensitive, and sure-footed, and altogether promising. The show knows what it’s doing and what it’s about.
