Hopefully the former.

I am amazed that Blatter hasn't been belted in the face yet. Visa, McDonald's and Coca Cola are getting itchy feet! :D

Why is Blatter hiding this morning? Yesterday was a 'great day' for FIFA!

I for one am shocked that all the implicated federations continue to be massive supporters of Blatter. WHAT A COINCIDENCE.

President Putin is not happy with the arrests. The Russian Times report him as saying they are a US attempt to stop re-election of Seth Blatter! But why would the US care who is president? And reaching out a bit and leaving aside the actual history of corruption in Fifa, what if the US actually do want a piece of the football industry?

“Unfortunately our American partners are using these methods in order to achieve their own selfish gains and it is illegal to persecute people. I would not rule out that in regards to FIFA, the same thing could be happening, though I do not know how it will end,” he said.

“However, the fact that this is happening right on the eve of the FIFA presidential elections, gives one this exact impression.”

“This is yet one more attempt to try and impose their law against other states. I am absolutely sure that this is an attempt to try and stop Blatter from being re-elected as FIFA president, which is a grave breach of the principles of a functioning international organization.”

There isn't an emoticon to do it justice (I don't want to de-rail the thread away from the actual topic but, yaknow, just saying...)

Oh, Putin.

It's amazing that as utterly corrupt that England (and the rest of the UK) are, they still couldn't manage to get the World Cup tournament to 'appen 'ere.

Didn't they say they wanted in an African World Cup in 2010? In which case South Africa would have to be the choice really

I'd imagine it would play out something like The Godfather - FIFA has long seemed to me to be little more than a front for organised crime, full of shady characters and ill-gotten gains.

Didn’t matter. The hands (votes) still needs to be greased in order to make sure the votes went to an african country so therefore a bribed win.

How ridiculous is it going to seem tomorrow, when in the midst of all of this corruption, Blatter still gets elected. :fp: If he gets what will amount to a ringing endorsement of his tenure, you have to wonder both how far the gravy train goes and also whether or not the 209 delegates really believe that the organisation can just carry on in the midst of such massive corruption.

Something has got to give surely. :?

You say that - but who is voting in this election? The nations who already knew about this corruption. The reason Blatter is so well-supported by the smaller nations is because he keeps the money rolling in. And they all know where the money comes from. They're hardly likely to be thinking "wait, we weren't allowed this bribe money? Best vote against the bastard that gave it us then!"

Problem is, no European FA will have the balls to boycott a major tournament, which is what it would take to force him out. They would lose too much money, and money talks.

Tim Roth played him in some FIFA propaganda film:

I was going to ask here how realistic would it be for a new rival football tournament to be set up? Possibly to take advantage of the winter season 2022 matches. But I just figured it be too unrealistic if other countries don't jump on board .

Then I read this on the BBC
Labour has suggested a rival tournament be set up if the bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups is not reopened.
But Culture Secretary John Whittingdale said nations were not "yet at the stage of boycotting the World Cup".

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-32913653

But if the sponsors are not going to ask for Sepp Blatter to quit I don't think any other organisation will dare.
