Head of Brazilian federation flees Switzerland ahead of FIFA presidential vote

World soccer's corruption scandal took another bizarre twist on Thursday when the head of Brazil's national federation fled Switzerland on the eve of the presidential vote that will decide whether Sepp Blatter remains in charge of FIFA.

Marco Polo Del Nero left Switzerland along with members of his personal delegation, amid reports that he was panicked by the arrest of his predecessor Jose Maria Marin in Zurich the previous day

No Brazil FA members left in Swtzerland to vote.

Is that an Italian paper claiming the WC 02 match with South Korea was fixed?

Well... they would wouldn't they?

Anyone who watched that World Cup would think so too. Spain and Italy were both utterly strawberry floated over. It wasn't even subtle.

I agree, I just think they're trawling up an old injustice because of everything that's going on. Probably not much to the claims, just a tabloid being tabloidy.

The sponsors are strawberry floating disgraceful. Issuing mealy-mouthed statements saying how they're keeping an eye on things and don't like corruption, with not a single one doing the right thing and withdrawing. What a statement it would make if the likes of Visa said 'No more' and stopped sponsoring FIFA tournaments.

I'd also like them to call for Blatter's head, but then you get into the murky realm of sponsors having too much influence on the actions of an organisation. On this one occasion it might be justified, but it's also a rabbit hole we don't want to fall into. In any other scenario, such an act would horrify us with its implications.

Indeed.

Sadly I still don't think anything major will happen with all this. Blatter has the support of pretty much everyone still. Plus, like Eighthours said the sponsors are just doing the usual.

Didn't some sponsors drop out in January?

I think its very possible stuff will happen. A seemingly infalliable organisation just became very falliable indeed. Sepp Blatter's stickability in a situation like this has yet to be tested. I'd say theres a strong chance Sepp Blatter will end up removed from power, or some other big shift. The situation is now completely untenable with the information now out in the open that there is. I don't see how that can be brushed under the carpet this time, but if anyone could...it would be real life James Bond villains FIFA.

Italians complaining about match fixing does make me laugh a little bit, but you can't argue that Italy and Spain were truly strawberry floated over in that World Cup.

While the irony is definitely real, I guess you could argue that, if any country would know match fixing when they saw it, it'd be the Italians.

I thought Italy saved their major crises for World Cup years? Seems to work well for them. :simper:

It's time for GRcade to start up a FIFA investigation, everyone else is.

Don't know if it's already been posted but Avaaz have a campaign to force Blatter out

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/clean_up_football_uk/

You'll also find information on how to contact Adidas, Visa and others directly

That's nothing, 89% of them said Sepp Blatter won the World Cup single handedly.
