Given it's been obvious for years what goes on, how come the authorities are acting now?

If you're talking about the timing, I believe that there is an election for the next President of FIFA. Of course, Seb Blatter is looking to serve again. This happening now should, should, eliminate those chances of him running again.

Hasn't virtually everyone else dropped out of the running though so the choice is basically him or nobody?

There's one person left and while he isn't a nobody Blatter has the African bloc in his pocket and so it'll be very difficult for Prince Ali bin Hussein of Jordan to win.

So you can't even get away with corruption in Switzerland now?

Dark times. Dark times indeed.

Wasn't it the same thing last time? Was Blatter's name the only one on the ballot or something after everyone else dropped out for some reason or other?

Yep.

Still can't help but think Blatter's going to come out of this investigation scot-free somehow.

It's much better this time around. While candidates have withdrawn and only one remains (I think -y'know, other than Blatter), there is a sense it's so that the vote isn't split and Blatter wins by default. Which will probably end up happening anyway but at least someone else is standing this time around.

Well that is just it, if it is anything to do with Qatar, that is Platinis work, not Blatter. So basically he could end up getting everything he wants, and being cleared....

Blatter is 79 though. He can't have that long left in the job?

And getting rid of Platini is no bad thing.

FIFA need an IOC style clean up.

There are some strong words and claims coming from the US Attorney General. This is just the start, and that 'FIFA needs a fresh new start' this could actually be the kick up the ass that is deserved by FIFA. :datass:

I wondered why the FBI were interested in any of this, but apparently some of it stems from the fact that the big American broadcasters were passed over for rights to show the World Cup through some of this corruption. It looks like Fifa's corruption has finally upset the wrong people. Presumably the Americans would love to get one over on Moscow if that is at all possible as well.

Although many are still expecting that Blatter will get elected on Friday, surely the Sponsors are going to have to take an even bigger stand now that their organisations are being tied to this fundamentally corrupt organisation.

Blatter may now be in big trouble.

The FBI say there is evidence of corruption in the 2011 Fifa Presidential Election.

Among other snippets you get a sense of the magnitude of corruption. For the upcoming 2016 Copa America they are talking about bribes of $110 million, which is a third of the cost of staging the whole tournament  .

Beautiful! They're gunning for Blatter as well now. They're investigating bribery in the 2011 election! :toot:

Edit: Just seen Harry's post. But then, I've put in the news link....
