I'd buy it for the name alone.

MS wouldn’t buy Nintendo, they would merge with Sega into a new company called Semicrondo.

Phil Spencer: At #E32020 we are proud to be working with Nintendo to bring the Xbox platform to Nintendo Switch. Select first party games from the past are ready to go, and all our latest releases to the Xbox platform will be available day one on Switch as well.

What a dream come reality that would be. It'd never happen, but it would certainly be good to see this relationship between the two bring results of that sort. Just think - Forza Horizon 4 on a handheld.

If by then there are elements of Microsoft using azure to game stream then they could use the switch to stream games to rather it needing to run locally.

Isnt Spencer on record as saying he doesnt care where people play Microsfot games, as long as theyre playing them? Nintendo clearly have no interest in building an online service worth a damn so why not farm it out to Microsoft, let them do the heavy lifting and put their games on your platform? Microsoft get their games on a popular go anywhere device, Nintendo gets an influx of new games and everyone* gets to play together, we all win.

*Except those filthy PS4 casuals

So is this just allowing people to connect between hardware or allowing people to play games they have bought on different hardware? Because if it was the latter I would be seriously impressed. The former just seems like common sense.

Confusing post is confusing.

I can play Rocket League, Minecraft and Fortnite online on my Xbox with owners of the same games on Switch, PC and Mobile. It’s not that complex.

Not sure what you mean but it allows Xbox and Switch players to play together, build the same world in Minecraft, shoot the same people in Fortnite, score in the same goal in Rocket League. Its cross platform multiplayer.

I think the post is pretty simple. He's asking if you can play games with people on different hardware if they have the same game or if you can buy the game on say the Xbox and play it on Switch also.

It allows people who own Xbox or PC or Switch machines to play together (on specific games; and these must be owed by each player). It doesn't allow games bought for one system to work on another.

Edit: Think of it as "cross-play" rather than "cross-buy".

SIE CEO Shawn Layden and father of the PS4 Mark Cerny were at a conference. Eurogamer reporter Robert Purchese excellently framed a question about cross-play and Sony answered with a hopeful sounding statement:

Eurogamer wrote:"I thought it was fascinating you talking about PlayStation 3 flying too close to the sun - your Icarus moment you called it, and then PlayStation 4 coming back to be more back to basics, to be more about the players. But there seems to be an issue at the moment, that Sony isn't listening to its players - or doesn't seem to be - and that's cross-play, Fortnite particularly. And I wondered if there were any plans to open it up? It seems to be Sony's not listening."

Layden replied by saying he could offer "one short statement". Here it is:

"We're hearing it. We're looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I'm confident we'll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business."

Underlying statement: Here's a PS4 price cut. Buy it. You can play with your friends.

Hopefully something is done to allow PS4 into the cross-play fun and it doesn't take long for it to happen.

Oh no, it might allow other games to be played crossplay and make us seem less like insular entitled twits!

The only way they will allow it is if it affects sales, theres no reason for them to jump on board while they are out in front and everyone is on PS4 anyway. If MS can turn it around and be the market leader with the next round of machines then we might see Sony make serious noises about cross platform play but until then I cant see them budging much.

The article above did mention an interesting item though, about how you could buy something on the XBox at 30% discount and then use on the PS4 version with no revenue for Sony.

Yes?

It works the other way too though, and overall you'd expect figures to even themselves out. If anything, surely Nintendo are at a disadvantage with this as their version of Fortnite came out last?
