Syfy is getting back into business with Ronald D. Moore, the writer/producer who developed the network's crossover hit "Battlestar Galactica."

Syfy's given a 13-episode order to "Helix" (a working title), a scripted series executive produced by Moore, Lynda Obst ("Contact") and Steven Maeda ("Lost") and written by Cameron Porsandeh, who'll serve as co-executive producer. The series is being produced by Sony Pictures Television.

SyFy described Helix (a working title) as "an intense thriller" about a team of scientists from the Center for Disease Control. After being sent to the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, they soon become entangled in a far more apocalyptic affair, facing "a terrifying life-and-death struggle that holds the key to mankind’s salvation or total annihilation." Mark Stern, Syfy's President of Original Content, said in the announcement that "With its well-drawn characters, taut drama, and incredible production team, we couldn't be more excited to see this intense thrill-ride of a series come to life."

Moore, who also served as an EP on Syfy's short-lived "Battlestar Galactica" prequel "Caprica," worked on a scrapped screenplay for the recentish prequel to 1982's "The Thing." John Carpenter's film seems to have been an influence on "Helix," at least based on that description.

"Helix" is slated to begin production soon in order to debut later this year.

Sounds interesting, will definitely be keeping a look out for this.

I was upset when the plans for The Dark Tower fell apart.

It has Hiroyuki Sanada in it, that's all I needed to know.

It was quite a good start. I can see this being quite a good series.

It's no BSG but it's an enjoyable romp. A bit concerned how they will stretch it out for 13 eps without basically repeating the opening 2 episodes.

It was decent enough. It's got a good atmosphere and visual style which I think make up for the kind of flat characters.

SyFy put up the third episode on their site so it's out there now.

Is it better than Continuum? That one never did sit right with me.

I didn't like Continuum at all but I did enjoy this. Take from that what you will.

Wrote up some thoughts here if anyone else is wondering whether or not to jump in.

Enjoyed the first double episode a lot but it wasn't without its problems. I strawberry floating hate Billy Campbell. Why the strawberry float does he whisper everything? It was the same gooseberry fool in The Killing. It drives me insane and is all I can think about whenever he's speaking. Most of the characters are so strawberry floating dumb too. And I hate shows where nobody asks obvious questions or gives straight answers in an attempt to keep the mystery going. Reminds me of Lost in that way.
