Wow, this thread was a long way back. Come on, GR Photographers, let's see your stuff!

I took these of my son on a recent visit to a steam railway. Quite pleased with them, I feel they really capture his personality.

Here are some photos from my road trip and other recent travels (Vilnius etc). These are straight out of the camera. There are versions on instagram that I've messed about with a bit.

Love the pictures. I've never worked with a colour film at 400, only B&W. I used to get Ilford 400 from a family friend who worked as a sports photographer for the Herald.

Quick question, when you get them developed do you get a digital scan at the same time?

More pictures, this time given the instagram treatment

Those ones I only got digital, didn't get any prints (yet). Though those uploads are the full resolutions which was a little disappointing. They do a higher res service but it's an extra £2 per roll. I'm thinking it might be more economical long term to get a flatbed scanner that does negatives, as development only is much cheaper than prints or scans. Previously I've only done prints, and while I love having the physical image I hate the thought of not having a digital backup. It'd be cool to keep it 100% analogue, but I don't have the space/time/money for anything like that.

Illfords B&W stuff is ace. The contrast and definition I got from some of the shots just blew me away. Unfortunately my camera developed a light leak during that roll so a lot of them got partially ruined. :(

That's cool. Was that posed or did you just happen across them?

Hello, I have a D3100 which I believe is a DX sensor?

If I get a not-DX lens will I be alright it will it be strawberry floated up? Also do I need one of those lens shroud things? Do they serve a purpose?

No, so long as you get an F - mount lens you will be fine.

The DX sensor is basically the same as APS-C or a 'Crop sensor' camera

What you will have to watch out for is what the focal length becomes. For instance, a 50mm Prime lens on a full frame sensor becomes the equivalent of a 75mm lens.

(with that in mind, it's not technical giving you a longer reaching lens but just 'cropping' the picture)

Good article here: https://photographylife.com/what-is-crop-factor

As for lens shrouds; They are useful for protecting the lens but are more useful for dealing with lighting. ( For example it can reduce flare when shooting towards sunlight and can reduce the amount of light that a wide angle lens might draw in )

Ta, Ive read all about the crop gooseberry fool and its confusing as strawberry float to be honest. It seems they take so many words to explain simple concepts.

If Im getting it correctly, for a 50mm FX to capture the same amount of stuff in my image as a 50mm DX then I would have to stand a bit further back from the subject to compensate for the crop factor? Im still getting the same sort of focals and gooseberry fool as a 50mm though right?

Im just looking at a 50 for portraiture sort of stuff.

Yeah that is pretty much the jist of it. A 50mm FX will behave 'similarly' to a 75mm DX lens.

Also, go for the FX / full frame lenses - as you can always use them if you upgrade to a full frame body.

Awesome! Love your rare forage into colour too.

Seeing as that worked, I miss having 10 million quid in my bank account.
