With the SD card, make sure you get a fast one. Don't just go for the cheapest. I've got a slow one as emergency back-up and it's hideous to use compared to my SDXC one.

A 16mp camera will need a lot of data to be shifted.

You should be able to get a 64gb card, more than enough to take a few thousand images, for around £20.

Nothing too special, just been messing around with lightroom, trying to see the benefits over cameraRAW and integration with Photoshop.

Been busy:

I'm thinking of investing in a Metabones Speedbooster, which would allow me to use my old Canon FD lenses on my MFT camera and they'd have closer to the same focal length that they do on a full-frame camera as well as making them a stop brighter.
It's basically a lens adapter that has a lens element that shrinks the image from the lens to better fit the smaller image sensor.

I'm looking into getting a Nikon D3200 as my first DSLR. It gets excellent reviews for a starter and the offer I'm eyeing up is this..

http://www.jessops.com/online.store/cat ... /Show.html

I'm just wondering, whether it would be worth getting just the body and another lens? Not sure if the kit this comes with is very good. Although I'm a beginner I'm not exactly gooseberry fool at photography so want to be able to do the best I can within a reasonable budget. For Camera and Kit I am willing to invest up to £400.

Any advice on a lens that is a good start up for general use? Annoyingly I actually like all kinds of photography. I like general shooting, Macro on wildlife and love landscapes.

I know there are a good few of you in here who know your stuff, so any advice would be great.

Cheers.

A 50mm prime with a large aperture would be a pretty good and relatively cheap addition, although it will take you over £400.

You might also be able to find it used for less and keep it under £400 that way.

If you do this, please tell us the results

I have a few old FD lenses belonging to a Canon A1 but would love to use them on something that doesn't involve film

Cheers. You have any good sites or recommendations for 2nd hand lenses?

Because I'm a n00b I'm thinking of getting the kit it comes with, but just weighing up my options.

There might be good sites specifically for 2nd hand camera gear, but I don't know of any. I've always just used eBay.

Sure.

How do you know what kind of lenses to really go for? I mean, I know I'll learn, but when looking at lenses there seems like a billion. How do you narrow it down for yourself?

Example, more browsing finds cheaper prices for D3200. But no idea what the lenses are like.

I'm no pro and I don't really know all that much about what equipment is good or not so I just rely on Google to find me good, informative reviews of whatever I'm thinking of buying.
Basically this is me, except replace Wikipedia with Google.

Here's a review of that 55-200mm lens:
http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Nikko ... ndex.shtml

And the 18-55mm:
http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Nikkor_DX_18-55mm_VR/

I would strongly suggest a 50mm prime though, whatever other lens/lenses you end up getting. Prime lenses (lenses that don't zoom, basically) tend to be sharper and just better all around and the wider aperture they usually have means you can throw the background/foreground out of focus way more than you can on a kit lens. It's also really good practice to be stuck at one focal length and be forced to make a picture work without being able to zoom.

Interesting. I'll look into Prime lenses.

I'll pop into an independent shop around here. Whilst I'm sure Jessops are fine to talk to, they are usually busy.

Annoyingly, that other bundle I posted works out around £400+ as the price doesn't include VAT/import tax etc. The lenses seem to get good reviews though and each on amazon are around £140 on their own. So in theory that would at least be a £200 saving with just the body.

I can go that high but it's not ideal.

Got my new camera the other day. Went for the Nikon D3200 so I'll try and get good and post some snappies.

Nice one. That's the camera I have. For my purposes, it's been great, and a colossal step up from the bridge camera I had been using.

What lens did you get? As mentioned above, I can recommend getting a fixed lens asap.

I have a 35mm prime lens which is fantastic for most purposes, especially portraits, etc.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-AF-S-NIKK ... B001S2PPT0

While you're getting to grips with the camera, though, the kit lens (I have the standard 18-55mm one) is good enough.

I also bought a cheap 70-300mm Tamron zoom lens for wildlife shots, but you can tell it's cheap and the results generally aren't very good.
