As OFSTED are wanting an improvement in our school's academic performance, I felt it worthwhile to take a pedagogical approach to this project. Many moons ago I was a trainee teacher, and the three lessons I took away were:
i) what pedagogical means
ii) I can't teach
iii) that topics covered over a range of academic subjects at the same time help to consolidate ideas and understanding.

When I was learning what a massive mistake I had made attempting a PGCE, I could hear the film studies class next door watching films. They spent an inordinate amount of time watching The Empire Strikes Back, which made me very jealous indeed. With that in mind I present:

Art and Modern Foreign Languages

Aurebesh is the written form of Galactic Basic. I have been interested in Aurebesh ever since I discovered a cryptographic crib in Star Wars: Behind the Magic which allowed me to translate the many Easter eggs left in by the encyclopaedia's developers.

As we are fast approaching peak Star Wars next week, I thought it would be a good idea to make a GR logo to commemorate the event. Sadly I can't do Photoshop, so I have drawn up a sketch to submit instead.

The first Death Star forms the C, and there was only one choice of ship for the A! If anyone wants to logo it up properly go for it...

Unsurprisingly, since it was Dans entry that inspired me, my subject this week is

CDT
(Construction Design & Technology)

So with a warning about potentially massive pics, I give you my weeks labour:

The GRcade 360:

A couple of things I wasnt happy with, the most obvious being I should have orientated the text the other way round to make it easier to read. :fp:

The yellow on Pacman is also a little washed out, but Maplin only had one yellow LED in stock so I had to make do.

It was also a bit touch and go near the end, I had to do some last minute rewiring, turns out the diagram I used had told me the wrong ground wire so I had to resolder that before It would light up.

Of course I forgot to take enough in progress photos so I cant show you all the sexy wiring and hot glue on the inside. I was just happy to get it done but Im pretty pleased with how it turned out. :D[/spoiler]

This also meant I wasnt able to make any MArio Maker levels this week so it better be worth it! :shifty:

I got wrecked at a Christmas night out last night and was feeling it badly today so ruined my plans

I was going to a History inspired bit of work, like the geography one we did but planned on visiting local historical locations and castles etc but that never happened.. Might try one of my backup ideas but I doubt it'll be worth it compared to the other submitted pieces

Won't win but I wanted to at least complete every task

R.E Homework

Religious Education

Religion is generally gooseberry fool. So much like the great L Ron Hubbard i've decided to create a new one that we can all get on board with: GRcadianityismology

Some basic outlines to this new religion.

There are a number of Gods and deities that we worship:

Steve - Mighty creator of the known realm
Garth - Son of Steve sent to us to enlighten us all
Gecko, Winckle and Karl - Archangels that keep the world ticking over

Then there were the loyal disciples of Garth;
Eighthours, Mafro, Mockmaster, PsychicSykes, Parksey, KK, Albear, Jay Adama and Buffalo

These disciples are now like this religion's version of priests, but with less child molestation practices.

Legend states that eons ago there was a happy community of people, but then one day the Old Gods got restless and decided to destroy the world. They offered the community the chance to uproot from what they knew and convert to their new regime. Move to new lands populated by sinners and Americans. It looked gloomy, but then one of the old Gods, Steve, gave hope to all. Using his might and wisdom he was able to create a new land for his people. One that the vengeful Gods had no control over. Thus GRcadianityismology was born.

Rules:

Like all religions there are some rules to abide to, much like the 10 Commandments. But a few less:

Thou shall not troll
Thou shall not use the “it was a joke” defends
Thou shall not make wild claims without reliable sources to back them up with during DISCUSSIONS
Thou shall not wipe standing up
Thou shall not put bread in the fridge
Thou shall have a wank

Drinking alcohol is permitted so long as it is larger, as in the drink larger.

Gambling is permitted too. In fact Poker is highly recommended. However Aftertiming is strictly forbidden.

Marriage and fidelity isn't too much of a concern. As a wise prophet once said “Plough her, worry about the relationship technicalities later.” A traditional GRcadianityismology marriage would involve the groom shitting on his bride's tits as part of the ceremony. And instead of engagement rings the couple get matching tattoos on their feet.

Holy Days:

Like other religions we also have holidays that are celebrated throughout the year.

Mid June - fEstival of gam3s - This period of time can last up to a week where we celebrate and get hyped over upcoming and newly announced videogames.

Aug 15 - GRcade Day - A public holiday to celebrate the creation of GRcade

Sept 11 - KKLEIN Day - A day to celebrate and appreciate the disciple Kklein, breaker of news. On this day it is important for everyone to wear their KKLEIN masks

Dec 25 - Christmas - Sort of like your standard Christmas its a time to remember that special guy who first appeared on this day a long time ago in a faraway land; John McClane. We'll never forget who you once were. It's traditional for people to swap signatures during this period which can make things difficult when needing to sign contracts or important documents.

Beliefs:

The core beliefs held by GRcadianityismology is to treat everyone fairly and with respect. Apart from those weirdos that get off to Japanese cartoon porn, they're fair game to ridicule.

If you would like to learn more about this religion you’ll need to ascend to the next level - a bluehat. You can do so by making a donation of £25,000 or more.

...the final lesson is Politics and Community and it will involve every single pupil of GRcade school. Past pupils, current pupils, expelled pupils and those that never signed up for our centre of learning.

The lesson will take the form of an election. Everyone will have one vote and will use it to decide which pupils work should be submitted to OFSTED as the bext example of GRcade brilliance.

I will now recap the final submissions and will then explain how the vote will work.

11 Dan.s until Christmas! wrote:Alright gang, here we go. For the final task of the final week, the lesson I decided to tackle was:

CDT
(Construction Design & Technology)

It was... surprisingly reminiscent of my actual CDT lessons at school. Spoilered for long and huge (kennethwilliams.jpg)

You may recall me mentioning in the Trading Post some time ago that I have an old, broken Nintendo DS. The console itself is still functional, but the hinge is borked.

Image

Image

Image

Well, my thinking was, I would repair the console - but not just by somehow fixing the hinge. My idea (which I've had brewing for a while, in case we got a design tech question one week) was to open up the DS, take off some parts of its casing, and somehow fit the entire working console within the modified casing of an N64 pad, creating:

The GR DS 64

:datass: :datass: :datass:

Chalkitdown supplied me with a guinea-pig pad:

Image

First things first, taken the screws out of the N64 pad and pull the two parts apart, ready to strip out the casing. This should have been the easy bit... but no, these damn screws simply wouldn't budge. :fp: I managed to get all of three out of the back of the sodding thing. You can see here the slightly-prised-apart controller laughing at what it did to my (admittedly rather pitiful-looking) screwdriver:

Image

Fortunately, I managed to find a screwdriver that was able to remove three screws. This saviour-driver I found in the bottom of a tool drawer - I think it originated from a Christmas cracker. :fp:

Image

You can see here just how much little progress I made:

Image

(I took the top of the stick off so I could more firmly press the pad onto the workdesk to try and figure some purchase for the driver in the screw head. Wasn't happening.)

So, onto the DS... which I thought before I started would be harder to get into, but the opposite was true. I managed to find a cheap Y-shape screwdriver to accomodate the DS's awkward Y-shaped screws so taking the DS back off worked out to be pretty easy. I was hoping to find that the majority of the console's innards were fastened to the back, meaning I could affix the fronts of the N64 pad onto the DS console fairly easily (as I measured that the DS D-pad and four buttons would fit quite well into the D-Pad and C-button holes of the N64 controller).

Image

The screws popped out pretty much straightaway!

Image

We're in!

Image

Ah, bugger. This is exactly what I didn't want to find: the console is pretty much all fixed to the front plate of the DS, so it won't be at all easy to replace the front casing parts with zombie N64 pad pieces. I might have to cut the N64 pad a little more than I'd planned and simply stick the parts onto the intact DS.

Image

So, a-sawing I went:

Image

Image

Image

Nearly there...

Image

Success!

Image

You'd think this might make the screws easier to unsettle... but no.

Image

There they all are, firm as ever, the shiny little bastards.

Nothing for it - this part isn't moving any time soon. However I did manage to get two screws out of the right-hand side of the pad, so I wonder it I might have more luck. Let's get to it then...

Image

And sure enough:

Image

This side proved much easier for me to 'hollow out'. I hoped that by doing so, I could get the screws to loosen by simply wiggling the two sides apart, but no dice.

Ghost pad:
Image

Here's the fully-hollowed-out part:

Image

Was that last screw any looser? Was it hell.

Image

:fp:

Right, back to the other side. Need to hollow this one out but it's all still firmly screwed together. Only one thing for it: float the screws, let's hack our way through.

Image
Success!

Although the screw is unmoved:
Image

Hollowing out this part was more difficult than I expected. I had to use the saw to break up some parts, which didn't go perfectly:

Image

But the end result:

Image

Right, we're getting somewhere with the N64 pad. Let's have a look at that DS.

Image

It's still working (although taking the battery out has factory reset the console). I can manouevre the top screen but I'm wary. There seems to be a wide, flat, coiling wire (or is it just protective?) and then one thin taut string-like wire connecting the two screens. Need to be careful here.

A little bit of pulling brings some of the plastic away. The hinge section on the original DS console isn't very strong. I wouldn't mind but it's taken off some of the part framing the top screen, which isn't ideal:
Image

Image

The piece is too small to saw. But cutting with large sharp scissors doesn't result in a very neat cut (at all).

Image

It'll have to do though...

Image

Image

There we go, sorted.

Some more of the hinge has come away:

Image

I used the saw to make a small incision along the curve of the hinge, then I'll use a screwdriver to prise the hinge away, all the while not getting close to sawing or poking at the wires inside.

Image
Incision made.

And:
Image
Result! :toot:

So I've made some more incisions. So much for not getting dust on the DS :dread:

Image

It worked!

Image

You can see above that the coiled wide wire is totally wrapped around the other wire.
It looked like it could easily be twisted back around to lie flat, and thus make the two screens easy to bring closer together or move apart.

WRONG.

DISASTER.

Image

:(

Yep, I've torn it. The wire has obviously been coiled too long. Even though I was only twisting it flat very, very gently, it wasn't having any of it. As soon as I went too far towards flat, the wire itself snapped, as you can see above.

Gutted. :fp: :x

(Unsurprisingly) Fixing the wire back together with tape (it was worth a shot, no? :slol: ) does nothing. Now the console lights up, only to die straightaway before a picture can form on the bottom screen.

Image

My dream of the GR DS 64, like so many of my poorly-realised IRL-CDT endeavours, has been an utter failure:

Image

Once all glued together, the plan was to seal over buttons and screens and other areas with masking tape, then paint the entire console a nice GRcade red.

Image

I even researched the colours. The closest I could find that would work with the DS's kind of plastic would be Dulux's "Redcurrant Glory".

Image

Sadly, the Christmas season begins properly for me as of tomorrow, so I was counting on tonight being my night to get my Task polished off. Safe to say it hasn't gone as I hoped. :(

...

...oh, don't you fret, House Baer - please don't take this as a forfeit. You think after all that I'd give up without a proper submission? How wrong you all are. Ladies and gents, here, in all it's glory - you've seen the working, now marvel at my final piece of coursework - I give you, my CDT project extraordinaire!

Image

Your move, gents. :shifty:
