I'd left the Blue light filter on my phone switched on for days and not realised. I just turned it off and now everything feels way too blue.

Doesn't it just automatically turn on at night?

Also I was told today most shops in New York want cheques. Paper cheques.
I barely even know what they are. Never used one.

Cheques :dread:

The sooner that particular method of payment is put down, the better.

Americans refer to the bill as the cheque, so you may be getting confused.

You're wrong, Ad. In America (named after Bank of America) when you've finished your meal in a diner you'll stick your hand up and say "check (sic) please" and the waitress/waiter will bring a blank banker's cheque which must be filled out and signed by a bank official in order to conclude the payment of the meal. It's a very time-consuming and antiquated system and results in very long lines of people in the US banks with their napkins still tucked into their shirts. Right ball-ache.

I have a chequebook which I only ever use to pay for the yearly maintenance of my electric hoist, and that's purely because my local council (whose contractors installed and maintain it) seem to be stuck in the 50's - other payment options include postal order and payment in cash at some office 15 miles away.

FFS how hard is it to set up a Paypal account for this?

You'd think that having some kind of online payment portal would be a way for them to save a lot of money. I'd imagine that manual handling/processing of cheques can't exactly be an efficient use of money which is in short supply for councils.

Don't quite a few banks no longer issue cheque books at all with any kind of account so the only way to get a cheque is to physically visit a branch and have them issue a cheque for you in the required amount?

Its even more ridiculous when you consider most of the people paying for said service will be physically disabled and possibly unable to visit the bank or pay in person.

Yes, but mainly due to the difference in wage laws between the US and the UK you can basically say that due to the wage disparity if they've done a good job then comparatively they only really receive just the tip.

If that's the case, can't you just write out some rubber cheques then they won't find out until you're home safe in new Zealand where Donald can't get you?

Advice plz.

So I'm moving out of my flat. The contract will end on the 31st December. Ideally I'd like to stay until the 4th of January. The new guy would just pay me back my deposit minus the rent for those 4 days. Does that seem reasonable? For some reason my flatmates are getting tetchy about it...

Maybe they just want you gone sooner rather than later.

I've done that a few times, paid a pro rata rate for the days I want to stay after contract ends to sort moving.

Sounds reasonable, but I've never rented or dealt with renting at all so have no experience or knowledge on the matter. Hope that helps x
