The funny thing is it was places like Brighthouse that made me always think phone contracts where you pay for the phone during were the same deal. When I worked it out though you're not paying any more than you already would.

I came across that kind of stuff when checking out TV prices recently, If you take the monthly repayment option you get the TV for nothing now but at the end of 3 years youve paid twice as much as if you paid up front. I dont know why anyone would take that option, they spell it out clear as day that youll end up paying twice as much. There must be a fuckload of people who are bad with money and want the big shiny TV right now.

KK wrote:Is it for people with really bad credit or financing problems too? Because John Lewis, Curry's and Argos all do payment plans (I'm currently using it for DFS, in fact) and interest rates are usually under 30%, and sometimes even 0%. Visa cards also do the same thing for the first year or so.

From the overall tone of BrightHouse to the 'I'm going to burn your strawberry floating house down, mate' nature of the sales assistant, this didn't seem like a place renown for great customer service.

They are for bad credit/finance problems and also for those that couldn't possibly afford white goods without "renting" them.

They used to be known as "HP" (hire purchase) companies, I still hear older people describing finance as "getting it on HP".

For comparison the same bundle is £489.99 at GAME. Clearly a PS4 isn't essential, but imagine having to rely on shitty companies like this for basic things like furniture or a fridge. You'd know you're being taken for a ride (or perhaps some people don't) but if you can't afford the price upfront your options are limited. They're charging the best part of £700 for a microwave FFS. :dread: :fp:

I remover those from when I was little.

IIRC I tried to convince my parents I could get a Megazord on a payment plan with my pocket money meeting the premiums - never thinking about total cost

Places like Brighthouse and Perfect Home are basically for people who would get turned down for standard credit at places like Currys or John Lewis. Or more specifically, people who think they would be turned down for credit.
If you look at all of their advertising you can spot that one of the reasons they're so popular is that they advertise a price by week, so people think "Oh wow, a fiver a week? That's nothing for a brand new Fridge/Washing Machine/Sofa/Xbox/Playstation/4K TV", the idea being that you never look too closely at the total price at the end of it all.

There are also a lot of horror stories out there of people who fall behind. They're all friendly and smiles while you're making your payments, the moment you fall behind though you've got people phoning you 5-6 times a day and hammering on your door threatening to take things away or call the police and report you for fraud/theft.

It's an industry that massively takes advantage of people with less disposable income who may need access to larger items like a Washing machine very quickly and should be massively more regulated. Things have gotten better in the last few years, they used to be a lot worse, but it's still not gone far enough. Their interest rates should be capped for a start.

The other ones are payday money lenders, strawberry float the APR on those things and if you take a loan and can't pay it off, you'll never be able to pay it due to the interest.

Totally agree. Fortunately the financial authorities have been looking at them a hell of a lot more closely recently and several people have been having success in having their debts written off due to the companies being guilty of irresponsible lending due to not doing checks and allowing people to take out payday loans just to pay other payday loans.

So, I caught the bus into town before. The bus pulls into the station and stops at a point where all the passengers know to get off. I'm sat at the back and ive got a couple of large carrier bags. As i get halfway down the aisle the driver closes the doors and sets off again. Only to pull over another 60 yards further on at a point where drivers park up and leave their vehicles. I say "excuse me mate - can you let me off?"

He then proceeds to berate me at quite a high volume and states why are you still on? You should have got off with everyone else and so on. Stating that he needs the toilet and I'm holding him up.
I apologised for the inconvenience and asked him to let me off. He refused to let me off there (as it wasn't a recognised stop - despite having let people out at traffic lights previously) and proceeds to carry on haranguing me in a verbally aggressive fashion whilst driving all the way round the station back to the original alighting point.

I again apologised for the inconvenience but also pointed out that his behaviour and attitude was very discourteous, rude and unprofessional and that i did not appreciate being spoken to in that fashion as paying customer. He just waved me away dismissively.

So i get off the bus - put my bags down and stand just in front of the doors. As he saw i wasn't leaving his arse clearly started to twitch. I told him i was unimpressed with his attitude and behaviour and that i felt his whole display was appalling.

He said nothing and then i said " Yeah, not so talkative now are you when you're not sat behind glass? I'd be keeping quiet as well if i were you!"

I then went and reported it to the station manager. Incredibly rude banana split!

Got Sky in early July there, and they took the first payment out on 26th(after I paid installation fees etc earlier in the month). They've now taken a second payment of a different amount, which is what I understand the monthly amount to be, today. This was not explained to me very well and I don't understand why they've done this.
