I mean in my experience there's plenty of crossover between the two.

The best thing is "the two" there could be any of the subcultures I mentioned. Yeah, there's definitely huge overlap between sci-fi/fantasy, liking anime, being furry, having a queer identity... and communities that celebrate that overlap tend to be full of really nice people.
