I make it sound a lot grimmer than it is, of course, when I go on a woe-is-me rant. I think I’m just getting frustrated that I spent ten years trying to get the damn doctorate, and don’t even have a job to show for it 4-5 months after finishing.

You should've stayed in academia.

I'm trying to stay in academia. That's the whole point of my post.

And no, I won't be moving into secondary teaching. I'm a researcher and lecturer, or I'm not in the industry at all. I'd need a completely different qualification to do secondary teaching and I'm not going back for a PGCert that'll take 12-18 months. I'd rather be a civil servant at this point.

Good luck with your academic ambitions Cora! I sometimes regret not putting more effort into attempting to stay within academia, but when I finished full time work on my PhD I found myself in a similar situation as you describe. Trying to do as much teaching, research and publishing to bolster my academic CV but all the while needing to support myself by others means as there just weren't the roles out there for me.

In the end I decided it wasn't a sustainable position and took a job "in industry". My PhD was in Bioinformatics and my degree was Computer Science so I had a natural move into IT. I definitely think it was the right move for me at the time but as I say I do sometimes wonder what I could have been doing if I stuck it out, and I sometimes feel like jumping to industry has largely wasted the effort that I spent on my PhD!

Really sorry to hear this mate. I would recommend the "You, Me and the Big C" podcast which has also been in the news recently as the BBC presenter who passed away was one of the ladies on the podcast. They talk openly about what it's like to deal with cancer but I would specifically recommend the "About the Nearest and Dearest" episode which aired on April 18th originally. This episode is split into two. Half involves the women who have had cancer speaking about how it impacted on their relatives and the second half is handed over to relatives (husbands and family members including Jonathan Agnew) who speak about their experiences being the support network and how they have coped. Helped me get my head around a few things.

I don't have any advice other than to be there whenever she needs you. I hope everything turns out ok.

Really sorry to hear that Dual. Remember that every cancer is different, be there to support your mum and also anyone else in the family who needs it. Everything depends on the situation, but stay positive and encourage your mum to do the same. Both my uncle and granny have been through it in the last few years and come out the other side, and both handled it in their own way, so everyone is different.

It sounded like you'd left to look for a job. I would've thought theyd be looking for talented academics to continue working in the university?

Just be there for her, give her whatever support you can.

My mum was diagnosed with Breast Cancer years ago, though it was fortunately caught early and she's now clear. I felt utterly helpless and wanted to do something, but eventually you have to realise that besides support there isn't a great deal you can do.
Don't treat her any differently, make sure she knows she's still the same mum and that you love her.
