I always find it odd that airlines take such a hard line on nuts when there are other more common allergies that they don't seem to give a gooseberry fool about - dairy, fish, certain fruits etc.

Are nut allergy sufferers more inclined to suffer than others?

More likely to suffer an anaphylactic shock, yeah.

Some nut-allergy sufferers can have a severe health impact from just being in close proximity to nuts. Whilst other folk have allergiess to things like dairy and fruits they don't - to the best of my knowledge - suffer by being close to someone else who is eating them. Tiny bits of nuts can get caught in the air and accidentally drift onto the sufferer; and teh impacts can take place by touch as well as being consumed.

I am always cautious about this because one of my nephews cannot eat nuts (i.e de to risk of anaphylactic shock rather than just not liking them). Thankfully he is not impacted by others eating them, but we still don't do so if he is around us.

This, I know many people who were castrated at birth as their nuts were making them swell up.

Interesting, my knowledge was always that even for nut allergy sufferers trials have shown that the percentage who will suffer from any effect based on skin contact is incredibly low and even in those cases the result is a rash rather than going in to shock. Conversely I know of one person who will come out in hives simply from getting milk on their skin!

I do find the whole subject of allergies fascinating, I'm sure I read something not too long ago that suggested scientists may have located a way to "solve" nut allergies!

Like you say it's better to be safe than sorry, if no nuts on a flight is the answer then I'm down with that!

Does anyone know what supermarket sells fresh crab meat? Been to Sainsbury’s and they have nothing, same with Tesco (just some John West e-number laden gooseberry fool in a can).

Definitely, Jen, it varies so much. I suspect that, in the case of this flight, they had a customer who suffers severe symptoms and so the air company took the decision to ban nuts from that particular flight.

My nephew's case has opened my eyes to folk who suffer from severe allergies. People in that situation have to ask questions of all food that they are presented with and this is very difficult when visiting a cafe or restaurant as the staff often aren't geared up for dealing with this. When my nephew was a baby and we didn't know what was causing the severe reactions, it was strawberry-floatin' frightening. Since then he has visited allergy specialists and undertaken medicine and medical trials. Nowdays he can deal with small quantities of peanuts (i.e. about two) and milk products, but it has been a twelve-year journey to get to that point.

I think part of the issue is that nut allergies are a lot easier to trigger accidentally, especially on an aircraft. For some nut allergy sufferers simply particles in the air can trigger a reaction when in an enclosed environment like a plane where the same air is being circulated over and over again. You've also got people with traces of nut on their hands touching things, especially things like the bathroom doors, that an allergy sufferer is very likely to come into contact with very soon before there's been any chance to clean them.

Yeah it can be a horrible thing to deal with, especially if you can't identify the cause of the allergy.

Eating out can be challenging if the place is not prepared for sufferers, I've got family who suffer with coeliac disease and trying to understand what they can and can't eat in a restaurant can be a nightmare! That said I think things are improving, most places are better at highlighting dishes which may not be suitable and food packaging is much clearer than it used to be.

I remember seeing a documentary about a guy who died from eating a curry in the UK, apparently the owner substituted almond powder with something peanut based because it was cheaper without telling the staff so even though the guy warned them he had a peanut allergy, they said it's fine as there are no peanuts in the dish he wanted.

In the end it looks like the owner got 6 years in prison for killing this guy...

I remember popping onto a local burger restaurant's facebook page, a very well regarded burger restaurant mind you, to find the most viewed negative review was a guy ranting about how they killed his niece.

Turns out he wasn't lying:

Just got back from the Ballet. Took one of my patients with me. His doctor gave him permission to stay out later. He absolutely loved it. It was really cool seeing him react like that.
