I can't decide between a 50-inch HD tele that is supposed to be one of the best available for the price, or for £100 more, a 4K TV from the same manufacturer, LG, with a slightly smaller screen at 48 inches.

My concern with 4K is that there just isn't much 4K content around at the moment, and to make the most of it I'd have to commit to something like an £8.99 monthly Netflix subscription.

My concern with HD is that I would be buying old technology and I might regret not having 4K for just a hundred quid more.

I'm not sure if a 4K tele would upscale the quality of my Blu-rays (without a 4K Blu-ray player). If it would, that would probably be my deciding factor.

No OLED option?

I voted for the full HD TV because 4K is a long way off becoming mainstream and bigger is better.

I wouldn't even consider buying a non-4K TV personally. In fact I'm currently saving up to purchase one (49/50inch) next year. Undecided between Sony or Panasonic at the moment so I'll be looking at their new line-up announcements in Jan closely.

I keep my TVs for about 5 years though so it needs to be future proofed. By the end of 2016 there will be a lot of 4K content available (Netflix, Amazon, BT, Sky, Virgin Media, YouTube, Blu Ray and probably Apple) will all be there with stuff.

Mass market 4K is years away, OLED is here, right now.

I've got £500 to spend. I assume I can't get OLED with a decent screen size for that. I don't want to drop below 46 inches which is my current size.

I agree, if you aren't desperate for the tv now then I would wait a year. There will suddenly be a lot more 4K and oled options soon.

And then I assume I wouldn't need a new HDMI cable for Netflix 4K as I wouldn't watch it through my Wii U, I would just use the smart app.

When do you next expect to upgrade your TV? If in the next 3 years or so, might be better to just get a 1080p TV for now. If you are thinking of 5 years +, go for the 4k model.

I haven't thought about it, I just want a better picture right now as my tv is foggy at the borders and just a bit old.

How long have you had the current TV? Ideally you should view both TVs from the distance you will be viewing from in your home to see if you can see the benefits of 4K.

I went for the 4K one at £499. It's the first and only bit of my redundancy money I've spent so what the hey. I also sold my TV just now for £125 so it's only £375 I spent.

Currys tried to sell me a £79.99 hdmi cable to upscale my Blu-rays, I said no, but I might search for a cheaper cable online if it's worth doing.

The cable upscales the Blu-rays? Currys sure know what they sell.

The TV itself will upscale everything to 4K, or the Blu Ray player (if it's a newer model).

AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI cable for £4.00 is absolutely fine for 1080p material or IBRA 2m High Speed PRO GOLD RED HDMI 2.0 (£6.75) if you're watching in 4K.
