Tekken had some weird endings (and some amazing music)

Anything to do with games at all.

So that's what David James had been doing when he blamed staying up at night playing Tekken for those 3 Newcastle goals

The problem with fighting games now is that there's too many characters, all you really need is...

Karate guy
Kung-Fu guy
Kick boxer guy
Jiu-jitsu guy
Jeet Kune-do guy
Wrestling guy
Judo guy
Ninjitsu girl
Akido girl

Hats of to Tecmo for basically focusing their entire Dead or Alive franchise around this fact. I mean, you really do have to admire the front they showed.

The one that sticks in my mind is Lei Fang's in DoA4, plenty of front indeed

Accidently grabbed her boobs, so she decides to send him to his death.

I was just thinking the same thing! She literally murders someone (possibly a dad) for something that wasn't his fault, and the other people in the carriage then applaud this.

Bonkers

Clearly that guy engineered a situation where the train would have to perform an emergency stop just so that he could feel up a girls boobies. Disgusting behaviour, he got what he deserved!

That one Xiaoyu victory pose where she'd do a handstand and let her legs fall open used to make me feel a little funny. Luckily though, that's a closely guarded secret I wouldn't dream of telling anybody.

...Ah shite.

Anyway. Tekken, the series singlehandedly responsible for confusing, non-sequiteur endings, along with stories lacking 99% of all necessary information. Who in the blue hell is Doctor Abel? Why is there an angel kicking heads in? Why is Armour King sat depressed on a bench? Why does Yoshimitsu's ending shamelessly rip off the Goosebumps book Monster Blood II? No idea. But you can betchyer ass I'm watching Bryan Fury chuck that tank turret another five times.

It's a shame that they bodged Tekken 4, they had some great ideas with the tactics and plane elevation, but ultimately it didn't pay off.

The music never got me pumped, there was a lot of chilled jazz going on which didn't suit the game.

Worked for Ridge Racer Type 4, didn't work for this.

Thinking about it I've enjoyed all the Tekken games. Some are stronger than others, true, but they're all good.

I loved Tekken 1 and 2 but for some reason my interest waned sometime around 3. I blame that cheese-meister capoeira character that appeared around then!

In fact I think Tekken 2 may be the last fighting game I actually bought, I enjoyed the genre in the 16-bit days and as I say I really loved the first few Tekken games but after that I think I realised that I wasn't into them enough to keep shelling out the cash. Most of my friends were PC gamers which didn't helped - fighting games thrive of multiplayer so there's only so much you can get out of them solo.

Tekken is one of those series where stuff really could have done with additional explanation in the first three games as very little was told to the player. Armour King in King's Tekken 3 ending was feeling down because seeing the second King become champion made him reminisce about his dear friend (the first King) who was murdered by Ogre. The game doesn't tell you that stuff but if the player knew the moments would hold meaning as opposed to just being confusing.
Doesn't matter anyway as the story spiralled out of control after 5 (Jin Kazama starts a global war, killing millions, just so he can prematurely awaken a monster that will destroy the world unless defeated and with it erase the Devil Gene (which ends up not happening)).

As for new characters, I do think Tekken has fallen victim to the very thing Tekken 3 was made to avoid. With 3 they replaced almost the entire cast with new characters and dramatically changed the tone of the game to fit the time that it was made in. These changes paid off massively, Jin Kazama was a far more appealing lead character than Kazuya or Heihachi ever could be, every new character had an obvious appeal and it helped make those characters iconic. Just look at how the game was sold to people in regards to the charaters:

People know these characters, even the returning characters like Yoshimitsu, Nina, Paul and Lei are best remembered for how they looked in 3. The time skip they did with Tekken 3 was a very smart move for its time and no other game has ever got it right since (Soul Calibur tried it but it failed because Soul Calibur is a historical game, Tekken is supposed to be contemporary).

I remember spending hours on Tekken 2 learning all the combos, throws and reversals for each character, the same with Tekken 3. I remember most, but play Tekken far less these days.

I did like the mapping of buttons to limbs that Tekken brought in, that was something which made it very easy to pick up and start understanding the move set of a character compared to other fighting games. The fact that you knew most characters would do some form of throw or other special move just by pressing a pair of buttons together was also handy.

My Tekken muscle memory is hard wired to the PlayStation controller. Tried TTT 2 on Xbox at a friend's and it just felt all wrong.

I could never consistently do the chain throws/holds for King or Nina, especially Nina's leg breaker hold, was almost impossible without an arcade stick.

As for the combos, the only one I ever mastered was Yoshimitsu's 10 hit one ending in the nearly always fatal sword stab.

Not having an arcade stick at the time I got quite competent playing Tekken with the PlayStation controller.

Tekken 2 was a lot less forgiving when it came to timing than Tekken 3, you really had to be on the nanosecond with that button press where as Tekken 3 made combos and movement in general much smoother.

I once saw someone chain together King's quintuple guaranteed-perfect mega throw. I've never been able to chain two throws.

Still, there's always that Xiaoyu victory animation.
