I hope that doesn't happen but I won't be surprised if it does if this titbit from the latest ish of Private Eye is true...

Less people having access to the Sun can only be a good thing.

Just look at nothing but Al Jazeera's English website and LiveLeak and become like the guy in Take Shelter.

I found out yesterday that you can get a free Telegraph or Mail if you spend over £5 in Waitrose and have one of their loyalty cards. Worth bearing in mind if you're near one (there are other offers too). I only spent £4.50 but I still got a paper 8-)

Sounds like a great idea, let's all spend more than we need to to get something for free!

Or if you need to do a top-up shop do it there (with the 10% off cardholders get for everyday items) and get a free paper...

While I do worry that the Guardian might have money troubles down the line, I do wonder about the amount they mention there. Did the Guardian make an overall loss last year of £44M, or is the private eye assuming that they could have made £44M worth of extra revenue if they use a subscription model?

The pricing is weird too - £1.99 is quite reasonable (though feels expensive after years of free usage and the abundance of free alternative newspaper websites), but £9.99 for a tablet optimised app is just odd.

Is the BBC website behind a paywall for non-UK users? It should be.

Here's a less liberal alternative to the Guardian for you Davey.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Exactly. These days it's quite difficult to spend under £5 if you're getting more than a couple of things.

Guardian.co.uk wrote:The Sun is to introduce a paywall from 1 August with a £2 per week charge, including access to Premier League football highlights.

Mike Darcey, the chief executive of News International who was responsible for striking the Premier League digital rights deal in January, said that the new service will be called Sun+.

"This move ensures that we will be offering a compelling, paid-for package across all of our titles, delivering great value for news that is worth paying for," he said, in an internal email to staff.

Darcey said the package will include a "suite of offerings" including seven-day access to the Sun online, via tablet and smartphone apps.

It will include access to Premier League clips as well as "exclusive offers and promotions".

The UK's biggest selling daily newspaper has always been free online, but has only increased its digital readership by about 5 million monthly users to 27 million in four years.

By comparison, over the same time period the Mail Online has gone from the fourth biggest UK newspaper with 23 million monthly users to the world's biggest with more than 110 million.

That 110 million figure for the Mail Online is going to go up...

I have always wondered why more websites don't just block people using ad blocks. YouTube blocks videos if you use ad block and ars technica blocked users who used ad block for a couple of days.

It's a tough situation. These papers obviously need to make money in order to exist but every bone in my information-should-be-free-and-easily-accessible body (catchy I know) screams against the idea of a paywall.

But I'll just stick to the Guardian so no biggy for me.

Been using NoScript and Ad Block Plus on YouTube for years and had no problems. It removes the ad-pop ups on the videos completely.

Really when I used it last on YouTube none of the videos would play.

Same here. Adblock works fine.
