Telegraph: STUFF about GAMES

Hey guys,
As a few of you may know, I'm involved with the running of the Telegraph's new video game site. We're aiming to become the leading non-specialist video games site by getting in before a lot of the competition and finally get video games the mainstream coverage they deserve. It's still very much a work in progress and the stuff that goes up may be a little piecemeal at first while we try and convince management to give us some darn money to run the thing properly!

I'd really like all you guys visit the site and keep an eye on it, so I thought a thread in there would be a good way to do it without intruding on any GGC stuff. Unless of course the article is of particular interest with scope for debate (I'm hoping to have something like that at the beginning of the week actually), or can pop any previews etc. into the game's 'official' thread. I don't want to come across as too much of a 'pimper' but at the same time as a long time member of this community (without you lot and particularly DPAD Dave and the marvellous D+PAD magazine I wouldn't be writing at all) it means a lot to me for you guys to read it! Also, your feedback will be invaluable to get a site out to the masses that people want to read. So please leave any comments, suggestions or even requests and it will all be gratefully received.

As I say it's a little 'bits and pieces' at the moment as there are only a couple of us working on it part-time but hopefully it will take off and be updated regularly. Right now we have a Fallout 3 and a LEGO Batman preview which are of particular interest, plus a few comment pieces and articles. As I say I'll try to keep this thread updated with anything of interest, but if you guys don't mind I will drop the odd piece into official threads if I genuinely believe them to be worthy of it. I hope many of them are!

So do check it out and leave me any feedback here. Cheers guys!

PS. I also have my own blog on the technology section where I'll be regularly gassing off about various bits and bobs. There's even a tribute to GR up there right now, plus a lament at the death of my latest 360.

The blog entry about GR and DPAD was a fine slice of pimping. Kudos.

I had no idea DPAD was your first job writing about videogames as well, congrats on progressing so far so quickly.

End of the console era?

I talk to Alex St. John, former MS dude and CEO of WildTangent. He's the guy you may have seen predicting the death of the home console and he'll be talking at Leipzig tomorrow. Tis interesting stuff, if I do say so myself.

Worthy of a post in GGC?

Cheers to both of you guys! At Yoshi, yeah it's a bit of a whirlwind to be honest, but as you can imagine I'm loving it! I seem to be getting some abuse for what Alex St. John said though. Don't shoot the messenger, I just interviewed the guy.

Anyway, just a quick blog update. Two entires, I talk about that Tiger Woods video and EA in general and also give my impressions on the Heavy Rain trailer from Leipzig. http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/go/categor ... technology

Admittedly it's a bit slow at the moment, but I do have a couple of things in the works that should be quite interesting, rather than just me mouthing off. ;)

That's brilliant, like it's been said it's cool of you to mention DPAD and GR up there too!

Well done

Legendary preview. New FPS from the makers of, er, Turning Point. This is actually rather good though, much to my surprise.

Also, check out my blog and list your most wanted games for the year!

Please.

EDIT: And right now you're the only guys that can read the preview as the tech guys have linked to the wrong piece.

With the Christmas rush about to kick off, we're going to find it a real struggle to cram everything in with such a small team + little time. So, I cordially extend a request for contributions. We still don't have a budget so it will be unpaid. I know it's ridiculous, but there it is, and frankly it's the reason I'm asking here. Of course, getting your byline up on the Telegraph is not to be sniffed at. And who knows, if it takes off there may be more incentives and assignments.

If any of you budding writers fancied 'applying' then drop me a line at tom.hoggins@telegraph.co.uk with a recent piece of work. It goes without saying that any accepted pieces would have to be of very high quality so any work will be carefully scrutinised. To this end, and ast the risk of seeming rude, I'm going to say I won't be replying to ones that don't make it. Although 'close' ones I will get in touch with.

Anyway, if a plebian like me can do it, I don't see why many of you lot can't.

Our Science Editor, Roger Highfield, takes a rather in-depth look at Spore. More the science of it than the game side, but is a really interesting read.

Sticking with a science theme, in suitably modest fashion Peter Molyneux tells me that Lionhead's next project is 'significant enough to be on the front cover of Scientific American'

I have to say I totally agree with the comment 'Dominic' left, I believe games have to be fun (otherwise whats the point?), and they certainly don't need to be complex to be fun.
Black & White would've been a fine game without having pets in it.
(I would've posted it on there, but apparantly you have to register, I might do it later).

Also, you write for the EDIT: Telegraph! and you aren't on LinkedIn? Join join join. Please. :)

I agree, but it doesn't mean the two have to be mutually exclusive. And register, pretty please, it will make me look popular if you lot leave comments. ;)
What's LinkedIn? Should I know about it?

Oh, and it's the Telegraph. :x
Remember that when you're voting in the GMAs for us. ;)

*cough* e-mail your vote to gma@intentmedia.co.uk *cough*

Sorry!

I'm just obsessed with using LinkedIn at the moment, it's a 'professional' networking site here. I think it's good for keeping in contact with people (not really friends, but anyone in the games industry).
