I think this is a decent idea.

Garth was the forum's admin at its inception (and still is, he's just taking an extended back seat because he's busy IRL).

The mass sign up happened basically when the URL was posted to GamesRadar.

Thanks, Karl. I was hoping for something a touch more... thriling... and excitingly presented, though.

I'll be sure to pad the scene out a bit in the anime adaptation.

Within moments, everyone wrote:Yes.

This seems like a cool idea. I dunno if there will be probs cycling that many logos, though - I recall that we've had people say that "they don't load up" when we've tried this in the past. But, hey, I'm not techy enough to know the truth about this.

I think we should celebrate on the 16th personally. It's when all the important people got here...

I think this can easily be worked around by reducing the resolution and filesize of the logos.

If people themselves cant do it I would happily do the process myself on every submitted logo and have them all conformal

Wayne was busy partying on and so Garth managed to sneak in there first.

It was like being led out of Egypt by Moses.

Was it only ten years ago?

... :o . I didn't know that! Garth is... the god of GRcade?

It'd be cool to have a "beginnings" story shared.

The Beginning

1 In the beginning Garth created the forum.
2 Now the forum was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of Garth was hovering over the website.
3 And Garth said, “Let there be Home,” and there was Home.
4 Garth saw that the Home was good, and he separated the Games from the Stuff.
5 Garth called the Games “Games,” and the Stuff he called “Stuff.” And there was Feedback, and there was the Trading Post—the first sub-forums.
6 And Garth said, “Let there be a vault between the sub-forums to separate Games from Stuff.”
7 So Garth made the vault and separated the Stuff under the vault from the Games above it. And it was so.
8 Garth called the vault “Archive.” And there was Who is Online, and there was Birthdays—the second stage.
9 So Garth created GRcade in his own image, in the image of Garth he created them; Mods and Admin he created them.
10 Garth blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the Forum and oppress it. Rule over the forumites in the Games and the Stuff and over every visitor that lurks but does not post.”
11 Then Garth said, “I give you every Moderator and Admin tool on the face of the whole Forum and every thread that has posts within it. They will be yours for Moderation and Administration.
12 And to all the Forumites of the Forum and all the visitors that do no post and all the bot that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every thread for you to post in.” And it was so.
13 Garth saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

Time is tight for the logo(s) build / readiness. Would you be comfortable with this proposal? Do we need to change any timings / people?

Jawa what you would probably want to do (assuming its going to go ahead) is have a thread or whatever where people can submit their logos to a respository. We could provide the raw PNG/PSD file with the layers for people who want to do that, although I think considering the event a ruleset of fitting inside of the resolution/aspect ratio would be fine, so people can do paint logos or whatever.

Then people just work on their own logo, upload it to a repo, myself, Karl, you, GG, whomever, can then ensure they all fit an appropriate filesize.

The tricky bit is that Karl or perhaps Errkal would have to replace the current logo function with one that draws a random image from the repo and uses that instead. It isnt a difficult function but its non-trivial if they dont have time.

Then whenever the logo is called it just pulls a random image from this repo and presents it to the user. Re the repo I think for the submission phase keep it simple for the non-technically inclined user so an imgur album, dropbox folder, google share anything really. Maybe even an ftp to gr itself though I fear that would elude someone who hasnt done it before, and for the event you want as many subs as possible. Then migrate this public repo to the backend GR logo repo which already exists.

The bulk of the work would be on Karl/GG/Errkal though as they would need to do the little header code bit. This is functionality that we have had before, I could swear on it.

This sounds like a good approach, Falsey, albeit the tech / timescale work for - potentially - Karl, GG and / or Errkal. I guess we'll need their expertise and view on whether this idea is a goer.

All you guys would really have to do is a run a thread for submission and have people make their logos at 700x200ish. Maybe maintain a list of links for me to copy/paste, that would be good. If you want to help submissions be filesize-optimised then that's fantastic but don't worry too much.

I will sort out getting them to rotate properly, you don't have to worry about that. The code already exists, we have had logo rotations before.

The forum didn't open its doors for posting until August 17th and that would be the day I would choose as our 'anniversary', so if we aim to get the logos up a day or two before that then that would be great.

Smashing - thanks, Karl! I'll try and get a thread up for later this afternoon.
