From today’s Radio Times, obviously published before the news. That last paragraph… Going to be a tough watch.

Oh no, this is going to make me cry. One of my in-laws volunteers on that railway line, and my son loves visiting whenever we're there, so it's already a soft spot for me.

When I read that press blurb I can't help but think that they both knew what was coming and that this was a last hurrah. It will be a watch tainted with sadness.

Dragon Ball: Japan manga creator Akira Toriyama dies

Image

The creator of Dragon Ball, one of the most influential and best-selling Japanese comics of all time, has died at 68.

Akira Toriyama suffered an acute subdural hematoma, a type of bleeding near the brain, his studio said Friday.

Dragon Ball is hugely popular around the world and the comic series has also spawned cartoon and film versions.

Fans have paid tribute to Mr Toriyama for creating characters that have become a part of their childhood.

The Dragon Ball comic series debuted in 1984. It follows a boy named Son Goku in his quest to collect magical dragon balls to defend Earth against alien humanoids called Saiyans.

Mr Toriyama had uncompleted works at the time of his death.

Didn't like the bit at the end moaning about him not finishing his work.

It's not moaning, it's just explaining that he had works unfinished - even the official statement from Toriyama's family/editor mentions the same. He loved his work.

I'm genuinely at a loss for words. This is absolutely awful news. RIP :(

He was easily one of the most important names in the manga industry and his works meant so much to so many. His designs for Dragon Quest, Dragonball and other things he made are absolutely amazing and his works have inspired so many others. Likely alongside Miura two of the more modern legends of the manga industry alongsides the likes of Tezuka and the Fujio brothers.

Aw man. I came to the Dragon Ball series fairly late but I loved his manga books (Got all of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z on my bookshelf.)

I even got some of his Dr Slump manga.

Easily one of my favourite manga authors.

That one hits hard.

I know that Dragon Ball will always be his biggest legacy, but I adored his work on the Dragon Quest games as well.

Absolute legend. Away to ride his own nimbus.

Yep it's hit me pretty hard ...

I used to watch a lot of Dragonball and Dragonball Z...
Back when I was 13 to 16 and I was putting my all in to becoming a Rugby player I used to put Dragonball Z on the TV and train to it, I kind of took Goku's training and gaining power as an aspirational thing. So his work means a lot to me.

Watched the last ever episode of The Hairy Bikers tonight on catch-up. Very moving tribute by Si King at the end of the programme. So sad, what cancer does. Hopefully in say 30 years it will be largely gone.

RIP. Always gave a great performance even if the film he was in wasn't. Really loved his performance in The Music Of Chance.
