So I saw this link posted and fancied a laugh at someone else's misfortune

Only to be met with this monstrosity:

Image

Banner ads, clickbait up the ass, a strawberry floating undismissable video popup in 2018 and of course a LOLOLOL ACCEPT OUR COOKIES K thing. Not one bit of that is the article I went to laugh at.

I'm finding more and more sites to be like this. Urgh just strawberry float off with the clickbait in the middle of everything, the text being shoved to one thin frame at one side while they try and push some ppi clickbait bollocks everywhere else.

It's why I genuinely rely on this place for most of my news, at least I only have to put up with the odd weebo or stool guy picture every now and then.

*contacts admin to arrange future stool bloke clickbait articles and pop ups*

On a more serious note, i too find these types of things annoying, and the standard of journalism on some of these 'news' sites is also utterly appalling.

I mentioned this in the Annoy Thread, but it seems particularly relevant here too:

"What's the price?"
"Dunno, there's a immovable video advert covering it up"

KK wrote:The thing is I'm not opposed to advertising, but it's like their solution to adblock is rather than to integrate adverts properly into websites or make it less intrusive, they keep ratcheting it up. You'll have videos and sounds that play automatically, enormous banner ads slap bang in the middle of the sceen, pop-ups that say you've won a prize (that on mobile can't be closed), mini surveys to complete before you can read an article, adverts that play before a video but then the video you wanted to watch doesn't load...

It's a joke!

Some form of adblocker is the only way to use the internet these days.

I hate that! Luckily the sites I regularly visit don't do it.

I don't seem to get those anymore, or at least I can't remember the last time I saw one - perhaps it depends on which as blocker you use?

Wow

I followed the link because other forumites suggested I'd get some amusement out of reading some people got murdered on a hipster bike ride, I didn't follow an advert.

And while we're on it, bloody mobile web pages that try to act like an app, with all fancy sliding transitions, but have none of the finesse or immediacy of an actual app, so just work like gooseberry fool LOOKING AT YOU OUTLOOK

This is peak web design https://www.warnerbros.com/archive/spac ... ie/jam.htm

No but seriously, modern web design is gooseberry fool on desktop. Every website wants things to work on mobile and tablets so you get much less information on the screen and it makes finding what you want much harder. People take the piss out of Japanese web design but: http://dengekionline.com/ is so much better than most modern game websites for news.

Responsive design is best for the end user switching between resolutions and devices on the fly, grcade does it well. But it doesn't drive ad revenue. List slideshows with unique ads per page are the scummy template at the moment.

The thing is if I Google something and the first result attacks my eyes with ads I back out and go to the next search result, I can't be alone in that?

No idea, i've only ever used adblockplus so i don't know if it's the same with others.

Quick research:

If I'm on a desktop where I use AdBlock then I think I still see them, if I'm on mobile where I use Blokada then I don't.

Adverts can be right annoying on websites, yeah. I was having trouble with Google Adsense, so took a look at some 'alternatives'. Instead of what I wanted - a single tower ad down the side to use some unused space - my site turns into advert central. Pop-ups, banners, and everything else. "Screw that," I thought, and turned it off as soon as possible. Thankfully I did get Adsense working a few days later, but I'm thinking of just swapping it out and using that unused space for something else, as the adverts that appear still aren't the greatest.
Thing I like most about adverts is when they mess up the website itself. You know the ones. When the advert itself appears underneath the text you're trying to read when you scroll through the page.
