Yeah this gets worse. I'm currently on the Chimera ants part and while I wouldn't say there's a lot of gore it is kind of jarring when it happens

Also I feel like in this show, everyone's power level is totally inconsistent. In the case of the Chimera ants:

So I just finished watching Assasination Classroom today.

I thought I was ready for that ending, but by god I wasn't.

Watched 91 Days and FLCL over the weekend.

I really enjoyed both. I really love Trigger/Gainax when they were with them and somehow FLCL had evaded me. I couldn't work out what on earth was going on, but I think that's part of the fun. Also the soundtrack as incredible.



For example.

91 Days was a really nice little Mafia story. It moved really quickly and there were plot twists every single episode. Can't really complain about it!

I watched FLCL way back when it first came out and didn't enjoy it at all. It just didn't click with me for some reason.

I really need to finish 91 days. Got a few episodes in before getting distracted by other series.

Quite enjoying the Made in Abyss anime and it features some really beautiful animation.

I love Triggers stuff. None of it makes any sense and things just keep on escalating. Their animation style is always crazy too and for some reason it just clicks with me. A recent example of an amazing series by them is Little Witch Academia and I recommend you watch it.

Have you watched Gurren Laggan and Kill La Kill? They're probably the best examples outside of LWA and FLCL of what Trigger are about. That and Uchuu Patrol Luluco and Inferno Cop.

I've watched Gurren Lagan, not the movies though as I just watched the series on Netflix, and did enjoy it for the most part (wasn't a huge fan of the ending mind) but not Kill La Kill, been on my list though. For some reason Netflix only have the sub rather than the dub and the Blurays for it remain stupid expensive.

I respect the fact you watched Gurren Lagann Laga, but please don't sully Kill la Kill with a dub.

I bought Black Lagoon box set, S1 & 2, on a whim today. Seemed to have good reviews.

It was dirt cheap from a new seller on Amazon. £5 as opposed to £17 upwards from other sellers. Wasted fiver, or a good call?

FLCL is probably my favourite anime ever. I have the box set that comes with some music from the pillows as well.

As you said for the most part you don't have any clue about what's going on but there are so many things that you notice when you think about it or watch it again.

I remember reading somewhere it was originally made for the studio to learn some new animation techniques. Also the dub is amazing, and with good reason, the director actually came to the US and selected the voice actors. So take that sub purists

I have a feeling no-one here will be into it, but Sakura Quest is ridiculously good. I love its carefully-written, down-to-earth story and its incredibly endearing characters. It's dramatic in a mature, understated way that feels very realistic, but still makes lots of time for comedy, and it has these wonderful little surrealist touches that make it feel kind of like watching a pleasant dream.

The same studio made another cute-women-doing-grown-up-things show called Shirobako which I think is better-known -- I'll definitely check that out now.

I read it a few years ago and remembered enjoying it. The author does a good job of crafting a dystopian world full of violence.

Tried refreshing my memory with a couple of chapters last night after reading your post but it seems I've forgotten so much. Might start from the beginning today as I've not really read any completed series for a long while now.

So, I power-read Blame! again over the past few days and I'd heartily recommend it. The first volume may be a tad difficult to get into due to very little dialogue and the few characters met being killed off very quickly but things soon change for the better with the second volume. While many people still meet a grisly end and the world continues to be pretty grim we're introduced to a number of recurring characters who really help move the story forward in an interesting way.

I guess it's time to start the Netflix movie next.

I've been reading One Piece for 10 years. I don't think it can possibly be made to work as Live Action. It's one of more cartoon-ish Animes. The special effects budget would be insane. There are normal humans that are 10 feet tall, humans that don't look human that are 20 feet tall, giants and then creatures which make giants look small..

It's going to be a disaster and damage the brand.

It's great! One thing I really like is the variety of people we see in Manoyama just getting on with their lives, and how they're used to advance the narrative as well as round off our perspective on the town. The show does a really good job of introducing a wide cast of supporting and background characters (on top of a fairly large main cast!), and of giving them enough personality that we're interested in their perspective on Yoshino and the events in the story -- the professor and his friends in the most recent episode is a good example of this. I think it's effective because it mirrors Yoshino's experience in-narrative of constantly meeting new people and through them coming to a deeper understanding & appreciation of the town. Although the plot follows Yoshino and the tourism board, it's really a story about a whole, interconnected town, and that's pretty cool!

I like anime (obviously!), but I have pretty particular tastes when it comes to critically engaging with a show as 'literature' as opposed to just watching it for light entertainment, so it's always a pleasant surprise when I find a show I can engage with on that level.



This season I'm watching GAMERS!, Tsuredure Children, and Aho-Girl. Would rec, they're all very funny gag comedies. (Also watching Hajimete no Gyaru for Yame - too good for this world too pure - but the rest of the show is garbage. In Another World With My Smartphone is kind of enjoyable for its light tone & easy-going pace but it's nowhere near as funny as Konosuba and is probably not interesting enough to rec. I've heard good things about Restaurant to Another World but I haven't started it yet. EDIT: Oh, and Centaur's Worries, but I'm not decided on it yet -- I think it's better than Demi-chan last season, at least.)
