That game in all the Twitter ads for completely different games where you're on a road and shoot the barrels to get guns/soldiers to fight oncoming waves of enemies - does it actually exist? It looks fun :shifty:

I think the game exists as such but it looks/plays nothing like the advert suggests

Last year the developers of the Katamari and Klonoa remakes made this compilation of games based on dishonest mobile ads.

The additionally devious thing is how they make the person playing the game absolutely terrible at it. You're compelled to keep watching to see how awful they are, and feel good about how much better you would be at it.

Yeah, this is what I've read. The fun bit they show is a mini-game reward, but you have to play some tedious, grindy, pay-to-win nonsense to get there.

Yeah, I downloaded one of those games once, and the gameplay in the advert was there, but it wasn't actually the main gameplay loop. The bulk of the game was the typical mobile freemium base builder full of three or four different resource types, build timers, premium currencies to speed it up, and a hand holding tutorial that removes any need for choice or thought. The puzzle bits in the advert were like an occasional adventure you could go on to win resources if you solved them, then a timer locks you out of doing another for a long time, so you go back to grinding out the tedious stuff.

Annoyingly this doesn't have the one Dowbo is talking about. I also kinda want the running one he mentions.

I would stand to guess it does. That type of game has been around for years, I downloaded one just like it before. It's fun to watch the number of people increase for the first 10 seconds (before you realise there's a cap), maybe play a couple of levels till you realise it's just completely riddled with ads. Ironically most games you find incessantly advertised are the ones that have incessant ads to the point it's basically unplayable. They're always designed in such a way that the worst possible decisions in the game are picked, cucking you of the satisfaction of seeing that big number and making you want to try it yourself.

Agreed!

I've never understood it because the games they depict look genuinely fun but they decide to just... not make them. They don't look any more difficult to program than the actual game they end up being so I always found it really baffling.

It's a bit like those corporate April Fools jokes that amount to joking how hilarious it would be if they made something cool and interesting.

Mobile gaming is in a bad shape, isn't it?

So few decent games among a sea of pay to win & play an advert to continue dross.

Top tip - if a mobile game you play has forced adverts, click on any short ones which appear and breifly browse the site. Add something to your basket if it's easy to. Those short adverts will keep repeating much more often than they otherwise would.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.
