I took the plunge and decided to buy my first board game today.

I was quite set on Risk legacy as it sounds pretty amazing but, being of the friendless variety, I knew it just sit there looking pretty without ever being played.

So, after a quick read of some of the Cardboard Children articles on Rock, Paper, Shotgun, I decided to go for Mage Knight. It sounds well good but it was the closing lines of the review that sealed it for me:

I haven't played it in years, but it was always a favourite of mine when I was growing up; less divisive than Monopoly, more fun than Risk, and less time-consuming than either.

Great game, truly a great game of Britain.

I'll have to buy it soon, the family's copy is pretty battered these days.

Now I just need to put aside a few hours to read the instructions and play it.

It seems good, there's a kind of walk through guide to get you used to your first couple of games and then there's a proper rule book which covers everything else the game has to offer.

Can't wait to give it a go.

We've been playing a lot of Panic Station recently, it's basically if John Carpenter's 'The Thing' was made into a boardgame and plays like a more paranoid, less complicated version of Battlestar Galactica.

It's fantastic but can be heartbreaking. The last game we played until 2 in the morning and then found out that we were all in fact infected. The result of which means everyone wins except the last person to be infected (me )

Ooyah, that sounds pretty brutal. And exactly the sort of thing you could really get caught up in.

Aye, I'll let you know, I'll hopefully get some time to give it a go at the weekend. Not one for a quick play by the looks of things but sounds like it's worth it.

Had some time to start on Mage Knight today but I had to stop within about two minutes of opening as one of the main tile pieces was missing.

It looks like the WizKids Games site lets you get replacement pieces, it's only one per game though so I'm going to have to check each bit is there before completing the order.

Not so bad for the tiles and tokens as they were quite easy to count, but now I need to go through the cards.

All 240 of them.



EDIT: And done. Could have been a lot worse, they were all numbered and divided into different types which made it easier. Still, it was time that I would have rather spent playing the game.

Bit hungover today but think I might get a game of Game of Thrones on the go. Hopefully my drink induced sub 100% cognitive abilities will stop me over thinking my decisions rather than just make me utterly terrible.

I think I have a second edition version so it seems like it was a one off.

From what I read when trying to find that out, it seems like the first batch was full of missing bits. So much so that certain retailers were having to hand out the bits in bags to anyone that bought the game from them! I suppose that's the boardgame equivalent of a game-breaking bug

Was a bit miffed as I'd put aside most of Sunday to play it. Ach well, had Skyrim and The Walking Dead game to keep me busy instead.

I'm not sure how long I'll have to wait for the piece to turn up so I decided to buy Zombie Dice, King of Tokyo and a Magic: The Gathering starter pack (*shakes fist at Dark Ritual*(but in a nice way)) with my remaining birthday vouchers to make up for it. That counts, right?

Game of Thrones is good, I take it? Love the books and the series.

i'm going to sell up some of my board games i think.

they never get played and are taking up space.

i've got the 2009 space hulk, never played it, cost me £60 new, they go for between £150 and £200 on ebay

going to sell some monopoly games too, i have 7 or 8 copies

Well you didn't really get to see on our last visit - but I am a bit of an enthusiast. Not as much as some of these guys - I just wish I got to play more.

speaking of cluedo, i was away with a few mates to the irish open last weekend, had one of the funniest games on monopoly i've ever had, but we also bought cluedo for some gooseberry fools and giggles.

its completely strawberry floating wrecked, the new version, its now set in some yuppy apartment with a pool, gym and cinema room, no study in sight! Gone also are the classic characters like Prof Plumb, Miss Scarlet, Rev white, no now we have guest yellow, guest blue etc.

all the character and charm of it is gone.

so glad i've still got my original classic version... and my simpsons version
