Just home from my Gran's, we had a big game the logo game which I'm strawberry floating god awful at, it's the movies and Tv version and I don't watch Tv really so that's 50% of the questions I'm strawberry floated on.

Then played Disney Trivia, which is really good, can hold my own at it.

Then proper Trival, genius edition, printed 89, it's been in the family along time. Won that mummy strawberry floater :datass:

Played Dicecapades yesterday at the in-laws' place. Fantastic fun with 4+ players.

Meh, and rather good. I always prefer being the Corp. in Netrunner.

Arkham just isn't engaging enough. If I didn't adore Lovecraft's novellas, I wouldn't even touch it.

I bought 7 Wonders on Christmas Eve to play with my family on Christmas Day and it was a strawberry floating disaster.

We only played with the A sides in an effort to keep things simple, but I was about 5 minutes in to trying to cover the rules and everyone was fed up, including myself, so everybody just decided we should start and learn as we go. My mum just couldn't understand anything at all (she actually asked to quit twice), while my dad was struggling with the concept of paying to play cards with resources while not actually using them up. Having everyone take their turn at the same time is an utter clusterfuck when nobody has played it before. At one point, someone was actually two turns ahead of the rest of the group. The entire third age was just everyone else discarding cards for coins.

"Can we not just play Monopoly?" was actually uttered. :dread:

I won by about 25 points by pursuing science. I didn't build a single stage of my wonder. We had a good time, because we were in good company, but the game itself was strawberry floating trash.

Lesson: Always ensure you pick the right board game for the right people. I wouldn't even contemplate a war-strategy or a deck-builder with my family.

To be fair, Seven Wonders has been sold as a simple game, but I found the same thing about it being incredibly difficult to teach. It's all mechanic and no major rules which makes it hard to explain what it is. I have seen it described as a family game numerous times but I couldn't disagree more. It's my least favourite game in my collection.

I got Carcassonne for Christmas. That's a great little game! My brother got Eldritch Horror which I don't think is my kind of game. Too much of a ball ache to setup and start playing.

The funny thing is it's a simplified relative of Arkham Horror.

FWIW, most of these games get MUCH easier and quicker to set up once you get a chance to go through and organise all the components.

So I'm told... What's the appeal? Games are best when they are simple to learn but complex to master! Mind you I didn't actually play the game. I got fed up while we were setting it up! "Place one Eldritch token in the Omen Wheel on the symbol corresponding to the Ancient One, and one Mythos token on the Doom ladder in accordance with the third card of your newly created Encounter deck but not if this contradicts the special Action command of your Investigator". Ok so I made that up but it's similarly nonsensical if you ask me!

The Arkham Horror games are a triumph of theme over gameplay.

If you're at all familiar with the works of HP Lovecraft, you'll appreciate them a lot more. It's almost a simulation, more than a game. It's verging on roleplay. The end result of a session should be a rather good yarn about investigators battling impossible odds and terrible creatures wot ought not be.

If you get a chance, investigate Elder Sign. It's the lightest of the various Arkham Horror games and serves as a pretty good introduction to the universe. It's also, at heart, a rather simple and enjoyable little dice rolling game.

There's also an app/PC version called Elder Sign Omens.

Pretty much - its a game that is very hard to win, so the end goal is, as you say, the overall tale of events and the process therein. I won on the first game only by the skin of our teeth. We were fighting Ithaqua and were about to freeze to death, and needed one roll to win, and made it.

Just had a play through of Pandemic.
Enjoyed it but it seemed quite easy. That could well be because I only had the 4 epidemic cards and my two characters were the medic and the quarantine expert who were good at stopping infections.
I may have also forgotten to infect cities once or twice.

For those who have played it more how often are you successful?

It depends on if you have 4 individuals or if one player dominates. The latter tends to win it a lot, but I don't find it much fun.

If you enjoy Pandemic, Forbidden Island is another great co-op game.
