If I wanted a fantasy based miniatures board game, what would be my best option?

Quite a lot of fantasy boardgames have miniatures; do you mean a self-contained wargame?

Maybe but not a money out like warhammer. I've also no urge to paint stuff.

Something like Battlelore might be up your street; its a fantasy version of Memoir '44 and is quite good while being relatively self contained:

Alternatively something like Descent might be your thing if you want to go dungeon crawling:

That looks really neat, tempted to hunt one down. FFG though, I can imagine it has a world of extra bits you can buy!

Zombicide Black Plague is pretty great. There's a kickstarter for Zombicide Green Horde starting any day now too.

Descent lead me to a link on Amazon for Castle Ravenloft. Read a few reviews and I think that might be better (less complicated) to play with kids so went with that one (and it was a tenner less). Thanks for all the tips though.

Couple of very confusing rule interactions I can't see explained, and if you did well last time it's seemed hard to complete (I think the Act card might be unclearly printed).

Having to resort to asking on official forums (and others :))

First time it's stumped me.

Meant to ask this a few weeks back: which rules were you having issues with? We played through it without a hitch and thoroughly enjoyed it. We managed to take down 2 of the 3 Horrors that were shambling about and only didn't get the third as it became super-powered as soon as it emerged. As in, all three of the "Add 1 fight and health" card got drawn and attached to it, almost in a row.

What happens when a monster you're engaged with moves - as the horror's do every turn.

First time it's come up for me...and couldn't find anything in the rules, FAQs etc.
In the end decided it moved, without dragging me with it or allow AoO (wouldn't matter since you would AoO with formula)

I took down 3 Horrors (solo, easy, Duke) but had to resign before the other 2 came into play as the encounter deck was overwhelming (3 other creatures hunting)

Yeah, if an enemy moves it disengages without an AoO (as those only trigger on an Investigator action). That same thing happens with the Rougarou in that pack.

Castle Ravenloft comes in a big ass box, this makes me very happy. The game itself could be rubbish but the amount of stuff it comes with scratches an itch that used to get satisfied with nineties PC game purchases. Will probably give it go tomorrow with the kids.

Finally sat down to learn that Dark Souls last night.

strawberry float me, that is some well-designed combat. It captures the spirit of the video game perfectly, without burdening you under a ton of systems. It's just move and a single roll of the dice, but you find yourself doing some complex moves like kiting enemies, stamina-draining heavy attacks and dodge-roll counterattacks. The leg-up you get as a solo player feels about right, too. Small fry enemies only trouble you if you get reckless, while the mini-boss is an exercise in patience. You do so little damage on your own, it's only worthwhile to attack when he leaves himself exposed after a big swing that you dodge. It's all about learning attack patterns and taking opportune strikes. I love it.

I'm also going to spend some time this week getting caught up with the Arkham Horror stuff. I promise.

Was interested in Dark Souls until I saw the price tag. Didn't even bother with a demo at the Expo.

New Arkham Expac dispatched today :D

So I went to the UK Games Expo last Saturday :toot:

Picked up Century: Spice Road which was being debuted. Those who watch Dice Tower will remember Tom Vasel referring to it as Caravan. Check out reviews and descriptions below. It really is an locked on award winner and as good as they say.

Also picked up Boss Monster and my friend bought Scythe. Yet to play Boss Monster and first attempt at Sycthe was a bit messy in execution to say the least.

Boss Monster - build a pixel art dungeon to defeat heroes

Scythe - territory control with battles and resource management

Akham - Undimension and Unseen.

Ok - the most basic/boring so far I think. Fairly standard play without an interesting mechanic. A few story elements come to head.

Is the Arkham game you lot bang on about much different to Arkham Horror? My group could never really get on with that.
