I'm now super excited about next week's Imperial Assault finale. The rebels have been on something of a spree recently, winning 4 out of the last 5 missions. We got halfway through the final mission last time and I'm super excited to see what they make of the final challenge:

It's Darth Vader. Obviously. He's stupidly powerful: 25 health, cannot be stunned or bled, spending 2 threat gives him an extra 2 block (on top of his 2 black dice defense roll) and he activates for one action after every Rebel activation.

All that and one of the Rebels is already wounded. All I need to do is wound the rest to win. By previously winning so often they've given themselves a strawberry floater of a final fight. I'm still not confident though; they mowed through Weiss in his AT-ST with 20 health in one turn so who knows?

So after rinsing the last two quite well (Easy mode though. Stuff anything harder solo) I decide to spend the 3XP to run "Carnevale of Horrors" as a side mission to my Dunwich LCG campaign.

That was very very very close. (Even on easier). Like to mechanically as everything ends up chasing you round the "map". Ashcan Pete's move and investigate action is invaluable.

Managed to get the "best ending" out (I think). Only 1XP from it (so net loss of XP) but 2 more cards to use in my campaign deck.

I did draw the curse of Rougarou weakness this time, but luckily in this campaign there's SO much to wail on it was never an issue - and Pete can slowly cure Horrow on turns I didn't have.

Taking down the "boss" was a hectic and close thing. 2 Allies, Duke, Pete and a Coat to soak damage an I just made it.

Another Ally card though...and a Mask. I think my deck is now about 1/3rd Allies. I just use them as disgardable health right now (and can have two up)

My wife and I won our second game of Pandemic at the weekend on the 6 epidemic difficulty, playing as 4 players. I think we've decided that the researcher and dispatcher are absolutely invaluable as we've used both of those characters when we've won and the dispatcher is really effective at getting the team members together to swap city cards. We've also decided it's far more effective to get into cities to trade their cards rather than waiting and hoping to pick up the right colour cities at the end of each turn.

Not sure if this really fits the theme of the thread but I'm DMing my second D&D session tomorrow night. I'm using the Lost Mines of Phandelver starter campaign and the party are just about to reach Cragmore Castle to, hopefully, rescue the dwarf who hired them, Gundren Rockseeker.

The party didn't fully explore the goblin cave hideout last session so the cave's bugbear leader may have a surprise waiting for them when they leave the castle.

Nice. After we finish Imperial Assault we're starting a Numanera game, so I'm really excited. My mate is a great DM, took me through my first tabletop RPG a few months back (Eclipse Phase) and it was great. I played through Torment Numanera a few weeks ago, so am super eager to get back into that world, this time as a time-travelling rogue.

That's great. Do let us know how the game is.

We finished Imperial Assault! It only took the 5 of us 4 months but we did it. In the end...I won! Well, I won the final mission, they actually beat me 7-4 overall (even if I did let them win the first few). The last mission was insanely hard for them though and I won more through just knowing what was coming rather than playing well, although I did a fair job at delaying their progress. The mission was a "fight your way to this door" type crawl, topped off by a monster boss fight when Vadar emerged from behind it. If I hadn't read tales of the Rebels winning this mission online, I'd peg him as undefeatable, at least with the powers I'd earned over the campaign. BUT, the Rebels did get him to half health I suppose, but by that point it was all over.

Anyone who hasn't played it and has 4 mates and 4 months to spare, it's a fantastic game.

Missed delivery on mine today.

Hopefully it's been left somewhere I can collect from so I can die.

I had a go tonight and it took some getting used to. It's mostly just learning how to read all the card symbols but I can definitely see that the strategy is there and I did get that Dark Souls feeling of figuring out the best way to beat a certain fight so that by the end of my session I was able to consistently beat one of the encounters that I'd been struggling with early on, purely by improving my strategy.

I never managed to get to the mini boss though before running out of bonfire sparks. It was incredibly hard and I died a lot.

It's definitely too early to give a proper opinion on the game but I'm very intrigued and it's something different to my other board games. Definitely feels like Dark Souls. One thing that I really love from my test play is how the traps work.

Oh and I played as the warrior who can't dodge for gooseberry fool with his starting equipment which felt like a big disadvantage.

Gravwell

This was brilliant fun. Quick, simple (as in uncomplicated and small, there's a bit to get your head round to understand for the first round or two) and involving. Also quite funny as players muck each other up (somewhat) unknowingly/unintended. It's a more involved/developed "Get Bit".

You each play a ship trying to escape a black hole, which is represented by a ~60 space track you move along

You each have a hand of cards to help move your ship.

But there are 3 types of move.

Move towards the nearest mass (i.e. if they're 2 away and you play a 3 card, you'll move one past them)
Move away from nearest mass
Pull ALL masses towards you

Each card has a move type, a move amount and a play order (A-Z, A goes first).

- - - - X - - - Y - - Z - - - - >>>>Exit

So ship Y plays a 4 move towards card (hoping to apply to the nearest mass (Z)). It's a late letter in the alphabet though so goes third.

Ship Z though plays a 4 move away card (hoping to apply it to (Y)). It's a middle letter of the Alphabet so goes second.

Ship X plays a 8 move towards card, hoping to apply it to Y. It's letter A so goes first.

Start

- - - - X - - - Y - - Z - - - - >>>>Exit

1st Move (X moves first and moves as it wanted to towards Y)

- - - - - - - Y - - Z X - - - >>>>Exit

2nd Move (Z now moves relative to X as it's closest mass)

- - - - - - Z Y - - - X - - - >>>>Exit

3rd Move (Y still moves relative to Z, it's closest mass, but in the direction other than intended)

- - - Y - - Z - - - - X - - - >>>>Exit

So you're constantly trying to predict turn order, move amounts, move directions of other players - while trying to clamber over each other move forward (there's mostly "towards" cards in the deck so being in front can be problematic in a great bit of constant balancing).

You also have to think about floating random masses, and if they will be moved. And constantly thinking what you'll be closest to on your turn.

Loved it.

Anyone doing anything for International Tabletop Day? This is the first year Ive been aware of it before its happened as Ive seen a couple of pubs advertising it and putting events on. I was considering playing some games at home on Saturday anyway so that would dovetail nicely with the whole thing.

So, Arkham Horror LCG catch-up: we got through Essex County Express and Blood on the Altar

Essex:

This is now my joint favourite, alongside House Always Wins. The mechanics were great and created an incredible sense of urgency in a game that is, in general, urgent as strawberry float. It also created my favourite moment of the campaign:I'm playing as Zoey whose weakness, Smite the Wicked, attaches itself to the enemy furthest from you. If you don't kill that enemy by the end of the scenario you take a mental trauma. In Essex we were right at the end of the scenario with only one set of train cars left which were 1 turn from being sucked away, and into the furthest we'd just placed a Wizard of the Order. Then I drew Smite. Initially I was gutted until we realised it would attach to the Wizard who was almost immediately sucked into the void. The image of Zoey screaming righteous death at the Wizard before he's sucked into the portal he himself had created was fantastic. We ended up getting the best resolution, and moved into Dunwich...

Altar:

The Midnight Masks of Dunwich, this one was a ballbreaker. Again it does some really interesting things with mechanics but we suffered a bad series of draws that led to me, the tank, having only 3 health left almost from the off. It was terrifying. Oh, and they stole my strawberry floating dog, the bastards! We eventually fought our way to the Hidden Chamber and managed to scrape ourselves a resolution but we lost the 2 Blood on the Altar characters, as well as Dr Rice. We strawberry floating saved my dog though. Booyah.

Had a second play of Dark Souls tonight but still can't give it a really fair comment because I just realised I'd forgotten two important rules while playing. I was completely forgetting to gain 2 stamina at the start of my turn and I completely forgot that you are supposed to start with souls in the bank when playing as one character. Forgetting those two pieces of information just made the game insanely more difficult than it's supposed to be. I still had fun with the encounters I had though but I'm sure I'll enjoy it much more now that I know I'll have a fighting chance next time.

Gonna have to read the rules again before I play again. It's not the easiest rule book to follow, I will say that. Maybe I'm just too used to Fantasy Flight's superb reference guides.

My wife and I played the first case of Watson and Holmes this evening and it was incredible fun. I can't wait to try the harder difficulty cases but we're definitely going to save the rest of the game to play with our friends.
