Apologies for rushing off at the end, I'd missed a WhatsApp from my wife at about 9 along the lines of "Just checked in, give me a call when the boy's asleep xx" and then got one saying "Is he still awake?!" and I panicked at thinking how I was going to spin sacking her off for online laserswords :dread: - I obviously still played the last duel while I was on the phone but I feel it affected my performance :slol:

This was fantastic. I sort of want to play through the single player again before we come back to it so I have my old saber moves back 8-)

Quote of the evening must go to the voting to kick Aaron, followed by "I love democracy, I love the republic".

Yeah that was surprisingly fun! I thought it was going to be a mess of half baked systems but really it's a fun mess of 3/4 baked systems!

I like that guns can be viable versus the saber, but I couldn't resist just using the saber all the time. Unsure how much finesse there is to the duels but they look cool!

And I barely even used Force Pull which is even more fun (If trickier to use well).

There's definitely a lot more to the saber combat than we saw. We kind of scratched the surface of some of the various techniques and stuff.

Found this after the games last night. It goes into detail on all the techniques, moves and abilities you get from the different styles and saber types. Quite in-depth.

I now know how everyone felt when I would break their Mario levels week after week.

The way you play is very different to how I planned it in my head. So going forward expect to be locked into rooms and forced to activate encounters in the order I want them activated.

Also helped me pick up on some of the things I have missed or not considered, so I've got a page of A4 with notes scribbled down.

So yeah guys the level is more breakable than I expected. I'll probably do an update for it over the weekend with some of the tweaks I've made.

I'm still interested in how the rest of you get on with it in the meantime, so let me know. :)

I thought the pinnacle of home mapmaking was my HL1 Borg Cube in a field with a single grunt inside, but this might slightly edge it ;)

Seriously though it's great and you should be really proud of it. It looks fantastic and it's clear you've done a huge amount of work on it. I'm not actually very good at OG Quake so I might not be the best playtester, but I wonder if there might be slightly too little ammo early doors. With the music the way it is you want to be shotgunning away immediately but in two playthroughs I've run out of ammo on the steps and down both button alleys - this might be because I'm gooseberry fool and you're not aiming your level at me! I wonder if I'm missing some secrets though...

Accidental edit: got further this time (up to the two spider things at the end of the first floor with the homing projectiles) and it's so much fun :D

Had a bit of a Quakey evening tonight because before Devlin's map I've been playing through Quake 4. Only halfway through so full thoughts when I've finished it but after the pretty formulaic first episode it blossoms into a really claustrophobic and atmospheric game. It's also one of the most 2005-looking games I've ever seen

Thanks for the kind words Dowbo. I'm glad you're enjoying it.

I've already got a tweaked and "upgraded" version from some of what I saw during Aarons playthrough. So I'll be happy to make a couple of tweaks based on what you said.
I'll stick the Aayl-Proofed version up tomorrow most likely.

Once I found the secrets it was fine TBF. Wouldn't worry about it.

Still fiddling around with it but figured I'd drop the current version of my Doom 2 level here for anyone who wants to give it a shot!

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MlTroa ... drive_link

INSTRUCTIONS

1. You'll need a copy of Doom 2 (any version should do the trick) as well as the modern source port GZDOOM (I've not tested the level in other ports or the vanilla version of Doom 2 so it may work in other places, but GZDOOM is probably the easiest and most common way to play the games these days)

2. Once GZDOOM is installed you'll need to tell it where your Doom 2 install is (if you've got the game via Steam then it should just find it automatically, otherwise you'll need to locate the game yourself)

3. With GZDOOM installed and configured you just need to drag and drop the file from above (MAP01.WAD) onto the GZDOOM executable (gzdoom.exe) and then make sure you select "Doom 2: Hell on Earth" from the IWAD selection section of the Welcome dialog that pops up and then click "Play Game!"

4. Doom 2 will start, now just start a New Game as normal and you should be dropped into my level. If everything has gone correctly you should start in an area that looks like this:

Image

The level has only really been tested by me during development and has not been tailored for any difficulty levels at this point so there's a good chance it might be all over the place in terms of challenge, all feedback welcomed!

EDIT: There are a number of secrets to find in the level that will definitely help improve your chances so it's worth being on the lookout for them! If you're familiar with the usual Doom tricks for hiding secrets you should be able to sniff them out!

Really enjoyed that Jenuall.

Thought the challenge was just right for me. Enough ammo to feel secure but not so much as to make combat easy. Doom also has the ability to scare me with sudden door openings and you invoked that quite well I thought.

I don't think I found any of the secrets. I assume they give you better weapons but it's definitely doable without them.

Next time Aayl is on get him to stream it.

Nice, glad you liked it!

Yeah the secrets were mostly to offer up additional weapons, there's a super shotgun and chaingun on offer if the player knows where to look, as well as a soul sphere and backpack for extra ammo. It's always hard to know how well to hide secrets - make it too obtuse and nobody will get them but likewise if it's too obvious then it doesn't feel as rewarding!

I'm looking to update the level with enemy/item layouts for each of the difficulties - by the sounds of things I might be able to ramp it up a bit more for the Ultra Violence level

Yes I will totally stream it Jen! Not sure if I have Doom 2,but was that what we played in multiplayer?

I'll get it installed and if you see me on (and I'm not playing multiplayer with GR peeps) I'll swap to your doom map!

Pretty confident all you need is DOOM2.WAD and I'm sure there's a way we can get that to you if you haven't already got it :shifty:

Updated version of Chapel of Blood!

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IpoXZQ ... sp=sharing

I've made some substantial and some not so substantial tweaks to the level.
Made it so you have to engage with the combat from closer up, tweaked a few areas and revamped a few fights.
I'm quite happy with the fight in the titular Chapel.

I've also added in a "Start" map. This allows you to set your Skill level before being given a choice of levels to play, though the current level doesn't have any different versions depending on the difficulty. Right now there is only one level (Chapel of Blood) but as I add more I'll just update the pack.

As always, feedback and vids would be appreciated.

You should be able to extract the zip file over the last one, so into the "rerelease" folder of the Quake Steam install. Again, CheekyQuake.bat should run the mod for you. If it doesn't run the game, open the console with ` and type "game cheekyquake" followed by "map cheekyStart".

Any issues let me know!
