PostThe cinema is gooseberry fool and needs to die.
by Fatal Exception » Sun May 06, 2012 11:53 am

After going to see Avengers Assemble I had the same feelings that I usually have when I go to the cinema - The cinema is gooseberry fool. Let's go through the facts:
  • It costs about as much for a ticket now as a DVD, per person
  • The seats are uncomfortable
  • You can't pause it when you want to go for a piss, or explain to your girlfriend why Thor, Iron Man and Hulk are in this movie but not Spiderman or Batman
  • No subtitles
  • You have to work around the cinema's schedule
  • You have to deal with other people, coughing, laughing, talking, texting, and making all sorts of noise with food.
  • 3D is gooseberry fool in most films and they keep pushing it, often without even giving a 2D option

So you know what, strawberry float them. strawberry float them in the ass. I'd probably pay a similar amount to legally stream HD versions of new releases to my living room. I really hate the Cinema > DVD > Sky > Streaming Services > TV process for movies. The cinema is no longer about the experience, it's about milking the public.

The only nice cinema I've seen was an independent one in the centre of Sheffield, which shows indie and classic movies and also has a pretty good restaurant , serving real food not overpriced popcorn and hotdogs.

This advert came on before the film:

Can't strawberry floating wait.

Price aside, my local Vue is awesome. All the screens are huge, the seats are really comfy, the sound system is amazing and I can't remember ever having an issue with the audience. The atmosphere for the Avengers opening night was great. :)

The price is definitely too high though, which is why I don't go as much as I'd like to, but that didn't stop me going to see The Avengers twice in two weeks. Blu-Ray is great and all, but it's just not the same.

Indie cinemas are where it's at. Nowadays I only use multiplexes if it looks unlikely that the indie cinema won't be getting a copy of it.

Without the cinema bringing in the bulk of money to the studios, elminating them would simply push of DVD/Download prices.

I'd introduce two screenings for every film- one where you're allowed to talk during the film and another where if anyone talks they're immediately kicked out of the cinema and banned for life. Tickets for the second would cost less.

Our cinema is pretty gooseberry fool so I stopped going there.

Sound is either to loud or not balanced right and the picture quality is shite. It's uncomfortable, everything is overpriced and other people are a pain in the ass.

Much better at home where, as you say, I can hit pause when I need to take a piss or explain somehting to the missus. Sound and picture quality is so much better and I can have a nice cup of tea with a couple of ginger nut biscuits that didn't cost me the price of a new mortgage.

Yes, strawberry float the cinema, it's needs to die.

I note that the people who think cinema "needs to die" are people who go to bad cinemas. :P

I do agree that movies should be available to stream at home on release though. It would obviously be more expensive than the cinema as the streaming service couldn't sell you overpriced junk food, but it would at least give you an option.

Sorry, but subtitles at the cinema would be strawberry floating gooseberry fool. I don't see how you can put that as a black mark.

I'm obviously speaking from my own selfish perspective, but that would actually ruin the movie for me.

Most cinemas have an option to go see a subtitled version of films, but the film selection and the times for them are pretty dire. There's one showing a week of Avengers with subtitles at my local.

When I went to see The Avengers the listed start time was 13:20. At 13:50 the TV adverts finished and the film trailers began (And not for any decent films either). At 14:00 I got a 5 minute advert for Orange Mobile and more TV ads. At 14:05, the film itself actually started.

Because it was in 3D I was charged an extra £2.10 (and another 80p for a set of glasses that they had the balls to try and ask to have back with a little 'deposit bin'), so for all of this I was charged the princly total sum of £12.10. For nearly an hour of TV adverts before the film.

And they wonder why people pirate films? First there's the extortinate cost, then for not pirating we're punished by being made to sit through a load of shite we already get at home when trying to watch TV.

Eh, there's one cinema that charges 17 euro to see the avengers, and another euro for the 3D glasses, and one that charges 9 with the glasses. It is absurdly expensive though, specially with the refreshments. 5.65 for one of those medium sized bags of chocolate buttons

Why even have any where you're allowed to talk during the film?

Cinemas should get proper bouncers so that people talking or using their phones get chucked out immediately.

And ban popcorn.

You should get back in the game Mitch Yost.

For deaf people the cinema is a real pain. Subtitled screenings tend to be on at terrible times and on the worst and smallest screens. Sony are trialling subtitle glasses which will be a big help if they work well.

The best chain cinema I have been to is easily the Showcase Cinema Deluxe. The lobbies are nice, clean and inviting places, the screens and seating are fantastic, the staff are reasonably attentive and because the prices are ever so slightly higher (still less than a £1 per ticket more than the competition) it keeps out the people who are more interested in talking/texting than watching the film. Whenever I go back to Leicester I pretty much live at the cinema and I've never seen or heard any disruption from the audience which is practically unheard of for a big city centre cinema. Plus, they have director's lounges where for a few extra quid per ticket you get access to a private bar and screen where staff bring you food and drink etc. So the cinema is able to cater for all types of audience under one roof.

My local cinemas are excellent and it only costs £2.25 on a Tuesday and £5.70 at peak times.

I go at least once a week so would hate to see them die off.

Not at all, I still love the cinema. Yes, you make some good points, but on the whole I still love the experience. Sure it's a bit of expensive but seeing it all on DAT SCREEN makes it all worth it. Stop going to gooseberry fool cinemas and/or showings. Go to an indie or to a late night showing and most of the audience problems (my only real gripe with the cinema experience is talkers and texters) is removed. Even then it's not that big a problem usually, went to a sold-out completely full orange Wednesday showing of the Avengers last week and the audience were impeccable, even by my cinema-nazi ruling standards.

That's all well and good if you live somewhere that HAS an indie cinema, but I don't. I have a shitty Odeon in a shitty town. And when big releases are only shown in 3D you don't have a choice but to suffer through shitty dark 3D.

I haven't been to the cinema in years, mainly because the wheelchair user seating areas are always in awful places (either right at the front or so far back that you can hardly see anything).

Don't like the cinema, so I don't go.

Then again, I watch about 2 films a year. In fact haven't watched a movie in 2012. 8-)
