Screen size is pointless for me. The bigger the screen the further back you have to sit and the more banana splits they fit inside for each showing. It's not like the resolution is any higher.

Aren't all of them electric? How would the projectors and sound systems work otherwise?

It's not just the size though. If you're at a decent cinema, with a decent audience the atmosphere can be amazing. I can't imagine having as much fun with the Avengers sat at home on my own as I did with 500 other happily enthusiastic people.

Methinks you perhaps need to search out a better local cinema rather than calling for the death of the medium.

How many cinemas can you honestly say are "local", though? There are two by me that I'd class as being local, as they're only a ten minute drive away: One's a crappy Odeon that charges far too much for tickets in relation to the quality of the cinema itself, and the other is a Showcase I haven't been to in years. Neither are really "decent", and the next cinemas that are easiest to get to are in Birmingham (a half an hour train ride away).

EDIT: Just noticed the Showcase is doing that £5 per ticket on Tuesdays thing. That'll do, pig.

It means that the rubbish cinemas need to die though, so good ones can take over.

Unfortunately never going to happen, as long as all those Odeons are around anyway. Rather than talking about anything dying, people should be talking about supporting independent cinemas, or at the very least the smaller chains.

Glasgow is pretty incredible for cinemas, if you're into watching films on the big screen. For me, it's immense. Watching a film in the pictures just feels better than seeing it on a laptop screen or TV for some reason. We've got two fantastic indie cinemas, the tallest cinema in the world, an Odeon and a Showcase a bit further out.

Odeon in Wimbledon is spot on. It's nice and clean. Could be doing with being a tad cheaper. Cineworld in Wandsworth on the other hand is a festering cesspit of crap.....

You won't get the cinema atmosphere when you're at home. Sure, it can be bad, but you go to the Prince Charles Cinema or a screening full of fans and it's incredible. The Akira showing at PCC was great, that one scene in the movie where it goes totally silent for like a minute, no one made a noise.

I like watching a film where people are there to enjoy it and respectful to others. PCC is my favourite cinema because everyone that goes there is a fan of the film or films in general, they know how to behave. Never seen anyone in there under 18 either.

Your cinema is gooseberry fool, therefore your experience and thoughts on cinema is going to be negative. Sorry to hear that.

Exactly: so the problem is that one cinema not the idea of going to the cinema in general.

Fatal Exception wrote:The only nice cinema I've seen was an independent one in the centre of Sheffield, which shows indie and classic movies and also has a pretty good restaurant , serving real food not overpriced popcorn and hotdogs.

The showroom  For £350 you can book a screen and any classic film you like for a birthday or whatever. They give you 50 free tickets for your mates but it's still open to the public.

100% agree on your points. I watched AA at the odeon and put up with DVT seats, some guy on his phone every 5 minutes during the whole film (So tempted to yell to the Ushers he was pirating the film) and 30 mins of ads.
Compare this to my visit to the showroom to watch The Pirates where they have a bar and I had a whole screen to myself (+family)

The main problem with the cinema (Teenagers) would easily be solved if they would fit headphone sockets to the seats.

The thing which irritates me the most about the cinema is the constantly rustling and munching sounds of people eating. It really is one of the most irritating sounds on Earth.

My biggest gripe is the flat fee.

The price of the film is still the same if it's 120 minutes or 90 minutes.

I really am clutching at straws here.
