I’m pretty sure that if you asked people over 25 about chart music in 2008, 1998, 1988, 1978 and 1968, they would all tell you it is terrible and was better years ago.

There were plenty of rubbish songs years ago too (Mr Oizo: Flat Beat being one particular 90's turd), it just seems like now there is a much higher rubbish/non rubbish ratio.

Especially since most of the chart music now seems to be mostly identical dance tracks which pretty much use a copy/paste system that includes the videos too.

This year so far only two albums have actually appealed to me, Kylie & Chvrches, oh and i may well also pick up the new Years & Years when it comes out next week (none of these have had significant success in the singles chart this year).

Swap the names out for older singers/bands and that exact post could have been written in 1998.

Pop music has always been 90% shite, it’s just as you get older the percentage seems to be more like 98%.

To half prove my point, here are some quotes from the forum in 2008.

I do think music reminds me of 1990 at the moment. It's a period I'm very nostalgic for, but I wouldn't call it good per se.

I do think music is going through a bit of an identity crisis right now. Why are movies, games, cartoons better than ever but music so seemingly behind the scale? I think there's more to it than simply rose tinted spectacles.

There's loads of great music, its just the stuff that sells enough to chart in the top 40 tends to be a mixture of identical sounding 'urban' gooseberry fool, boy/girl bands and boring as strawberry float singer/songwriters like Adele and that ginger twat Ed Sheeren.

There's literally nothing in the charts that appeals to me and I'm fine with that.

Last week i was going thru the radio stations on freeview & Hits fm and Capital FM were playing that Answer phone song at the same time. Not once during the day but twice within a few hours.

My car stereo very rarely strays from Smooth.
Same here, except substitute Smooth for Magic, Heart, Absolute 80s and some digital London station I can't remember the name of.

Yes?

Don't drag me into this, I reckon chart music is better now. But marginally. The SoundCloud mumble rap stuff I don't get

One thing i have noticed other stations have latched onto the playing the old skool hits from the 00's & 90's. I know Kiss started the trend with Kisstory in their original timeslot before they expanded. But now all stations have a DJ and slot throughout the day or evening playing old skool garage, dance, and pop hits.

I get the impression that alot of songs nowadays are either made for just club's or to be used on TV Adverts to promote something.

It is, but it doesn't surprise me that Vermilion doesn't like it
