The Darkness II will feature award-winning comic book writer, Paul Jenkins, who will provide a tightly integrated narrative that weaves dark humor with hardcore tenderness.

Take a step back from the familiar and comfortable, and prepare to embrace The Darkness.

It’s been two years since Jackie Estacado, now the Don of the Franchetti crime family, used The Darkness to kill the men responsible for his girlfriend’s murder. He’s been unable to shake the memory of Jenny’s death since bottling up his supernatural power, and now The Darkness wants out. A sudden, unprovoked attack on Jackie’s life heralds the start of a full-scale mob war, which has clearly been orchestrated by some outside force. The botched attempt opens the door for The Darkness to reemerge, and sets Jackie on a journey to hell and worse, as he unravels the mystery behind the attack and the motivations of The Darkness itself.

“Sometimes that whooshing sound you hear is that of comic fans holding their collective breath,” said Marc Silvestri, founder and CEO of Top Cow Productions and co-creator of The Darkness comics. “So often disappointed when a favorite character gives birth to a lame movie or video game, us fans have come to expect the worst. And sometimes we get it. But not with The Darkness II. Yeah, call me biased, but this second installment of Jackie Estacado’s epic saga is – in my humble opinion – one of the most brutally cool games I’ve ever played. 2K Games hammered this one out of the park.”

The Darkness II is not yet rated by the ESRB. For more information on The Darkness II, please visit http://www.embracethedarkness.com.

The Darkness 2 will be released on Xbox 360, PC and PS3 in the autumn, 2K Games has announced.

Developed by Digital Extremes and based on the supernatural horror comic book series created by Top Cow Productions, Inc., The Darkness II takes players down a brutal and personal path as Jackie Estacado, wielder of The Darkness - an ancient and ruthless force of chaos and destruction.

The Darkness II breaks out of the sea of conventional first-person shooters with its fervid Quad-Wielding gameplay, which will allow players to slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies with their Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons. The game is layered with the use of dark versus light, steeped in deep and twisted storytelling, and engulfed in stylistic violence that is visualized through a hand-painted graphic noir technique that stays true to its comic book origins.

"The Darkness II is a well of dark and imaginative violence, and it's a stylized and beautiful nightmare," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "The Darkness II continues the 2K Games tradition of delivering quality, innovative games that are filled to the brim with atmosphere and deep storytelling. The game takes a unique stance on fighting in the dark versus light. Combined with the arsenal of weapons at Jackie's disposal and the gruesome attacks of the supernatural Demon Arms and Darkness powers, we're proud to announce another title that delivers on our core values of creating games for gamers."

Wasn't it though? I can't think of a single game I would say was more 'alright' than Dark Sector. It's like a development team looked at Gears of War and Resident Evil 4, went "we can do that", and then ran out of money about a third of the way through.

I hold the first game in the highest of regards. It was such a nice suprise, that somehow managed to affect me on a personal emotional level. Another must have for 2011

True that. It just went on, far, far too long and the whole you can't keep a gun for very long made some bits rather annoying.

But yeah, other than that, yeah, the glaive was pretty cool.

Be nice to see what they can do with a bit more money/time. But I like The Darkness a lot, so let's hope they don't fluff it.

I think it's arguably the best of the Gears clones we got after Epic's game. The glaive was a lot of fun for a while, it just got a bit old by the halfway point, and then the game got really frustratingly difficult. And the weapon upgrades were cack, too. Looked quite nice, though, and for the first few hours it was reet grand.

To sum up: cautious optimism.

That's a huge pic. Bigger than 1080p.

PC confirmed?

The Darkness suffered for me by coming out near Bioshock. Darkness is a solid enough FPS, but when compared to a FPS that changed the face of the genre it struggled. I'll still play the second game in the series, but don't be surprised if it incorporates elements of Rapture et al into its gameplay.

Yes it is.
PC Gamer wrote:The darkest thing about the Darkness was that it was only released on consoles. Thankfully, a sequel has been announced, and it will be coming to PC.

Before Ord posted, I was going to mention that all the pictures for Skyward Sword are in 720p, and there's no HD Wii yet :shifty:

Keeping on topic, I still haven't played the first game yet. It's another one of those games that I bought and just left. Is it worth playing through before this one?

Might be worth checking out GamesTM next week.

Revealed inside: The first details on 2K Games’ forthcoming The Darkness II, including exclusive comment from new developer Digital Extremes and a sneak peek at games™’s The Darkness II cover, coming 17 February.

The Darkness II to be revealed in the next issue of games™Announced 08 February, The Darkness II is 2K Games’ surprise sequel to its 2007 comic book adaptation FPS, The Darkness. While the first game was developed by the critically acclaimed Starbreeze Studios, The Darkness II has been passed to Digital Extremes, the developer best known for its work on Dark Sector.

Digital Extremes is carving its own path with the sequel, removing some of the backtracking subway elements of the original and overhauling the graphics engine with a cel-shaded look that retains the bloody and violent tone of the Top Cow comics. In an exclusive interview with games™, The Darkness II’s lead designer Tom Galt explained Digital Extremes’ approach to development, in comparison to Starbreeze’s efforts. “What Starbreeze did well, in a nutshell, were characters and story”, he says. “It’s one of the only games I played where I actually felt an emotional connection. The Jenny death scene was incredible. I think in The Darkness there’s a lot of exploration and walking through New York City, and we felt like, ‘Well that’s cool,’ but we decided to take our game in a different direction and focus more on the action and the story.”

In a press release announcing the sequel, 2K president Christoph Hartmann says, “The Darkness II continues the 2K Games tradition of delivering quality, innovative games that are filled to the brim with atmosphere and deep storytelling. The game takes a unique stance on fighting in the dark versus light. Combined with the arsenal of weapons at Jackie’s disposal and the gruesome attacks of the supernatural Demon Arms and Darkness powers, we’re proud to announce another title that delivers on our core values of creating games for gamers.”

The full interview with The Darkness II’s lead designer Tom Galt, plus an extensive look at the game itself, will appear in Issue 106 of games™ which should arrive with subscribers this weekend and go on sale across the world Thursday 17 February. Want to subscribe? You can do so here, while the issue can be bought from the Imagine Shop or downloaded for the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch through iTunes.

I was disappointed by the first game. Didn't think it was that good, frankly.
