Couldn't you make similar arguments about Hollywood and the pop music industry though?

That's BS, the industry isn't going anywhere any time soon. There's always some lofty, somewhat pretentious blogger trying to bring about some grand underdog-style revelation about the state of the industry while looking at a fairly narrow set of examples.

Why are new gimmicks a problem and what is wrong with serving up an audience with what they want? This guy has no point.

Actually why do some people insist on calling new features "gimmicks"? That word is almost self referential nowadays.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

E3 is mostly about new innovations and exciting projects, not just more of the same, which they also showed. So while they did show Halo etc, it's mostly focused on what they were planning next and how it's very different.

So basically, I disagree completely.

All this new stuff (which isn't all that new) is going to bring gaming to a greater audience. That's good, no?

Any E3 at which Nintendo show not just one, but TWO high profile 2D platformers gets my vote as a good year.

That write-up is about the Microsoft conference alone. He'll be doing a Sony and Nintendo one today. Something tells me he won't be as disappointed as he was on Monday.

The new DS is extremely interesting to me. High quality visuals AND an Analogue stick?!? Joy!.

Me too. The DS is very popular in our house (the wife pays it more than anything else. it's pretty much all she plays).

I almost wish I'd not sworn not to buy it unless it's region free (at least for physical media). :fp:

Its almost a reversal of last year, with Microsoft aiming at a market that isn't paying them any attention and Nintendo really, really trying hard (and succeeding imo) to win back their core audience.

The difference is all the best Wii games have been aimed at both markets. NSMBWii sold well on both accounts and WSR offers enough depth to keep people playing for ages whilst giving the casual buyer something to dip into occasionally.

I wouldn't be suprised though to see this year as the turning point Sony need to regain ground on Microsoft. Some clever price cuts and bundles could see the PS3 storm ahead in europe at christmas.

... And then Nintendo rode back in on their white horse to save the day.

I do wonder if we might not see some price-cutting from Nintendo this year too. They've played the different colour card, they've updated their bundles. It's basically "price-cut" and "new model" left to go in the traditional bag of tricks.

I'm so happy for Nintendo and myself right now, they've finally delivered something gamers can be happy about as well as casuals. it's as if they've gone, hey all you haters have a strawberry floating look at these. *shows E3*

You know, I'm not even slightly annoyed or angry.

As soon as I saw that pic, I realised that Natal is not for me, in the same way most of the Wii's stuff is not for me.

On the other hand I like the look of The Shoot and Sorcery, but I'm not paying anywhere near £60+ for a controller (inc. the analogue stick bit) to play two games that look good, not great.

Probably the worst thing to come out of this E3 is just how excited people are for a new Xbox (for some, more than anything else at the show), and thus how much what people are playing on bothers them.

Madness.

Someone said last night, it's as if Nintendo have spent five years pandering to all the casuals with all those dross party games, got them into gaming on a Nintendo console and then reverted back to form, taking their new audience with them. They always said that all they were doing was introducing new people to gaming, now they're introducing gaming to those new people.

I don't think you'll be able to walk into a shop and pick up a 3DS for about two years after launch.

oddly enough, the wife and 2 daughters are looking forward to a fair few of those games and when i watched Rez 2 in action i was day one for Natal.

i new i'd be getting move before E3 and so far its looking even better.

the wife uses wii every day (animal crossing), but i dont think i'll be getting anything that was shown by nintendo other than a few 3DS's.

did the gaming industry just die. not for me as i was well impressed with the "normal" games on show for 360. and thankfully blu-ray is big enough to hold the normal and Move versions of games so i'll not need to buy both. ;)

:?

People may want the wireless, the bigger HDD, the silent running, the optical out, the extra USB ports, the saving on another power supply for kinect or even the look to match their HDTV.

Why is that bad?

It could be called "Year of the PS3" or something

back in the real world the slim 360 went straight to number one on amazon.com and they had to stop orders because of demand.

I think the 360 slim and pice cuts to current models will mean that 360 gets quite a boost for a while now. Move and Kinect both look likely to be too expensive to make any difference.

I think the wii wil just sail on forward.
