Got an interview with the NHS finally. Ridiculous that I've sent off over 40 applications and have worked for them previously.

Is this the same boss who was praising you previously? Mixed signals.

Different, there's two partners who run the business.

That's just like at school when you have to listen to some berk teacher mouth off for ages because a couple of students are being knobs.

You just have to sit there and pretend you have room for improvement (of course you do).

Very confused, but it closes today so I'll phone them when I get in and ask what the deal is and if it's worth reapplying. I've not had an outright no yet so here's (kinda) hoping.

Call them up and say as you've applied they can save time and money by not wasting it on other candidates. Casually mention that you know where their family lives.

Your boss is gooseberry fool then. Most problems are not down to people, but processes.

Sounds fun :dread:

I bet receiving an email like that has really helped morale in the office and that people are just desperate to do their best for him now.

Honestly since the third boss left this second boss who's called this meeting has turned into a royal dick. He's completely unapproachable compared to our other boss as well. It's like he has this barrier up and snaps at people for no reason. The other boss who I told you about the other day is pretty damned good if I'm honest, he's really open with people and wants to hear everything from everyone.

I replied to that long email yesterday as he asked for responses explaining anecdotally where I think the problems lie and why I didn't think his points were entirely fair to everyone and got a response saying thanks and it was actually very helpful. Got all day to think about what else to say so today should be fun!

Just had a huge update for a bit of software that caused a lot of slowdown, tried to fix it and something else broke so had to call the software support.

It got fixed and now the companies intranet is down somehow. Today is not fun at all. :fp:

Got lumbered with the work experience guy. Pretty sure he had no idea what I was talking about when I gave him some tasks. I'd forgotten how useless you are at 16, and how the process of academic book publishing is probably impenetrable to someone who's need had any exposure to it before.

I was going to give him some research to do into human trafficking but thought that might be inappropriate? Don't want his parents to complain he spent all day googling sex slavery or whatever.

I have heard we are short of fruit pickers so you ought to be able to demand a higher salary for picking those strawberries!

IMO just try to guide him through some tasks you find useful, even if you have to go slowly. Doesn't really matter what they are. The best thing about my work experience wasn't the details of what I was doing but feeling like the team wanted me to be there and had come up with something useful for me to do.

My experience of IT people is that they are gooseberry fool. I had an issues with Office a couple of weeks back. First I had to work with the first line in India that took 45 minutes to get nowhere. Then I got "upgraded" to tier 2 people in the UK (who would have dealt with it prior to us offshoring to India) and after strawberry floating about and getting nowhere, they uninstalled Office, installed the latest and all was good. This took in total about 3.5 hours.

Last week I had the exact same issue at home. Found out which update to Office caused the issue, uninstalled it and all was good.

Took about 10 minutes.

I've given him some make-work but hidden that fact pretty well. He's been doing some actual work for the digital team which I thought was a bit mean tbh as it was boring as hell spreadsheet stuff. I've given him something a bit more interesting that I'll definitely need to redo later, but that's fine.

I also gave him some research to do on academics working on the implications of life sentences without the possibility of parole, and his first question was 'what's parole?' so that wasn't the best start.

We have only ever had one work experience kid. He was pretty awesome, all he did all week was play some online browser game (Runescape I think) and was cheeky as strawberry float whenever anybody asked him to do anything. We genuinely all liked him though, he made it a very funny and entertaining week.
